Chapter 2: I Turned Their Secret Night Into The Beginning Of Their Downfall
Chapter 2: I Turned Their Secret Night Into The Beginning Of Their Downfall
At the bottom of the stairs, I stopped.
The house was silent.
Not the peaceful kind of silence I knew from ordinary nights.
This was different.
Heavy.
Deliberate.
Upstairs, Lauren and Brandon were asleep in the bedroom I had spent years believing was ours.
I looked at the small device in my hand.
A single green light blinked.
Everything was working.
But I wasn’t here to wake them.
Not yet.
I walked into the kitchen and opened the cabinet beneath the sink.
Inside was a black case.
I pulled it out and placed it on the counter.
For weeks, I had been collecting evidence.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I wanted certainty.
And now I had it.
I opened the case.
Inside were copies of bank statements, photographs, screenshots, printed messages, and one folder with Lauren’s name written across the front.
I had discovered something three weeks earlier that changed everything.
Lauren hadn’t simply been lying about Brandon.
She had been moving money.
Small amounts at first.
Three hundred dollars.
Five hundred.
Eight hundred.
Always to different accounts.
Always on days when she told me she was working late.
I had originally assumed she was hiding an affair.
Then I found the larger transfers.
Nearly $27,000 over eleven months.
And every payment led back to the same company.
Brandon’s company.
That was when I realized this wasn’t just about betrayal.
There was something else happening.
I pulled out my phone.
There was one message waiting.
Are you ready?
I typed back.
Yes.
A reply appeared almost immediately.
Then don’t confront them yet.
I smiled without humor.
That was exactly what I intended to do.
Not yet.
I walked quietly toward the hallway.
On the table near the stairs was Lauren’s purse.
I stopped beside it.
I didn’t need to search it.
I already knew what was inside.
Earlier that evening, before pretending to leave town, I had watched her put something into the inner pocket.
A hotel key card.
Not from Columbus.
From a hotel only fifteen minutes from our house.
I had photographed it before leaving.
Now I took one last picture of the purse and walked away.
At 2:06 a.m., my phone vibrated.
The message came from the private investigator I’d hired two weeks earlier.
We found the account.
I stared at the screen.
Whose?
The answer came back.
Brandon’s.
Then another message.
But that’s not the important part.
My pulse quickened.
What is?
There was a pause.
Then:
The account is receiving money from Lauren’s employer.
I looked toward the ceiling.
Suddenly, the pieces fit differently.
The late nights.
The secret meetings.
The money.
Brandon.
And now her employer.
I opened the folder on the counter and pulled out the document I’d received that afternoon.
At the top was a name.
Lauren Parker.
Below it was a transaction history.
And one payment had been highlighted.
$12,500.
The recipient wasn’t Brandon.
It was Lauren.
The payment description said:
Consulting reimbursement.
Except Lauren wasn’t a consultant.
She was an administrative manager.
She had no reason to receive twelve thousand dollars.
I took a photograph of the document and sent it to the investigator.
His response was immediate.
That’s the payment we were looking for.
I typed:
Why?
He replied:
Because it happened two days after Brandon’s company won a contract from her employer.
I stared at the screen.
My wife and her ex-boyfriend weren’t simply meeting behind my back.
They might have been working together.
And if that was true, their secret relationship was only one part of a much bigger secret.
I heard a floorboard creak upstairs.
I froze.
A few seconds passed.
Nothing.
Then I heard Brandon’s voice.
“Lauren?”
She answered sleepily.
“What?”
“Where’s my phone?”
“In the living room.”
“Can you get it?”
“No.”
He laughed quietly.
“You’re making me regret coming here.”
She whispered something I couldn’t hear.
Then the bedroom went quiet again.
I waited.
Five minutes.
Ten.
Then I heard footsteps.
Someone was coming downstairs.
I quickly stepped into the dark dining room.
Brandon appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
He was wearing yesterday’s clothes.
He looked around.
Then he walked into the living room.
I watched from the doorway.
He picked up his phone.
For several seconds, he stared at the screen.
Then his expression changed.
He made a phone call.
“Yeah.”
Pause.
“I know.”
Another pause.
“No, he’s gone.”
My entire body went still.
Brandon continued.
“She told me Thursday.”
I leaned slightly closer.
“Nobody knows.”
He listened.
Then said something that made my blood run cold.
“Once the money clears, we’re done.”
Silence.
“That’s what she promised me.”
I immediately pulled out my phone and started recording.
Then Brandon said the name I had been searching for.
“Lauren has the documents.”
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
He hung up.
Then he turned toward the kitchen.
For one terrifying second, I thought he had seen me.
But he didn’t.
He walked back upstairs.
I waited until his footsteps disappeared.
Then I entered the living room.
His phone was still unlocked.
A notification appeared on the screen.
Transfer scheduled: $75,000.
Tomorrow.
I took a photograph.
Then another.
And another.
But before I could leave, a new notification appeared.
This one wasn’t from a bank.
It was a message.
Did you find the documents?
I stared at it.
Brandon hadn’t opened the message.
I didn’t touch the phone.
Instead, I photographed the screen.
Then I noticed something else.
The sender’s number.
I recognized the area code.
It belonged to a city several hours away.
But the number itself was familiar.
I’d seen it before.
In Lauren’s call history.
Dozens of times.
I had always assumed it belonged to a client.
I had been wrong.
I quietly walked back into the kitchen.
Then my own phone vibrated.
The investigator had sent another message.
We ran the number.
I opened it.
It’s registered to Lauren’s older brother.
I stared at the screen.
Her brother had died three years ago.
At least, that was what Lauren had told me.
I suddenly heard the front door creak.
I turned around.
Nobody should have been there.
The door slowly opened.
A man stepped inside.
He looked directly at me.
Then he smiled.
“You’re not supposed to be here.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who are you?”
He closed the door behind him.
“I’m the person who’s been trying to warn you.”
I didn’t move.
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a sealed envelope.
“Your wife isn’t the only one keeping secrets.”
I stared at the envelope.
“What is this?”
“Proof.”
“Proof of what?”
His expression became serious.
“That Brandon didn’t come here tonight because he wanted your wife.”
I frowned.
“Then why?”
The man looked toward the ceiling.
Then back at me.
“Because they needed something from your house.”
He handed me the envelope.
“Something Lauren has been hiding from you for four years.”
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
My breath caught.
It showed Lauren standing beside Brandon.
But they weren’t alone.
Between them stood another man.
A man I recognized immediately.
My own business partner.
And written across the bottom of the photograph was one sentence:
They’ve been planning this since before you married her.
