The knocking came again.
This time, louder.
My husband stood and quietly locked the deadbolt.
“Who is it?” I whispered.
He didn’t answer.
My sister remained on the phone.
Then she said something that made my chest tighten.
“Your ex isn’t the person you should be afraid of.”
I stared at my husband.
He seemed unsurprised.
“Then who is?” I asked.
My sister hesitated.
“Your business partner.”
I remembered the photograph.
The hotel.
The receipt.
The secret payments.
Everything suddenly connected.
My husband opened another file on his laptop.
Inside were recordings of meetings from the past three months.
My business partner had been secretly transferring company funds.
But there was something worse.
He had used my signature to authorize several transactions.
I covered my mouth.
“I didn’t sign those.”
“I know,” my husband said.
Another knock interrupted us.
Then a voice came through the door.
“Open up. We need to talk.”
I recognized it immediately.
My business partner.
My husband looked at me.
“Now you understand why I filed for divorce.”
I shook my head.
“No. I don’t.”
He frowned.
“You were protecting the company.”
He nodded slowly.
“I was protecting you from being blamed for destroying it.”
My phone suddenly received a new message.
It contained one photograph.
My business partner was standing beside my ex.
Between them was the original receipt.
Underneath the photograph were six words:
