The Marriage My Father Secretly Ordered Daniel To Protect
The Marriage My Father Secretly Ordered Daniel To Protect
“Because your father ordered him to.”
Michael’s words seemed to hang in the air long after he finished speaking.
I stared at him.
For several seconds, I honestly couldn’t understand what I had just heard.
“My father ordered Daniel to marry me?”
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
Vanessa looked toward the hotel windows, where the black sedan was still parked across the street.
“That isn’t exactly what happened,” she said quietly.
I turned toward her.
“Then tell me what happened.”
She took a breath.
“Your father knew someone was looking for you.”
“Who?”
“We don’t know.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it’s the truth.”
I slammed my hand against the table.
“Then stop giving me pieces of the story and tell me the whole thing!”
Several people in the café glanced toward us.
Michael lowered his voice.
“Your father discovered that approximately fourteen million dollars had been moved through several companies connected to Daniel’s firm. The money wasn’t simply business revenue. Some of it belonged to your father.”
“My father had fourteen million dollars?”
“Not exactly.”
He opened the folder again.
“Your father was helping someone move the money into protected accounts. He believed the people involved would eventually come after him.”
“And me?”
Michael nodded.
“You were the leverage.”
My stomach tightened.
I looked down at the USB drive sitting in my hand.
“So my father hired Daniel to protect me.”
“Yes.”
“And Daniel married me because of that?”
Michael hesitated.
“That was the original arrangement.”
The word original caught my attention.
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa finally looked at me.
“It means Daniel wasn’t supposed to fall in love with you.”
I froze.
For some reason, that sentence hurt more than anything else they had told me.
I almost laughed.
“That’s supposed to make me feel better?”
“No,” Vanessa said. “It’s supposed to make you understand why everything became complicated.”
I looked at Michael.
“You’re telling me my husband spent eleven years pretending to love me?”
“No.”
The answer came too quickly.
Michael leaned closer.
“Daniel married you because your father asked him to. But he stayed because he chose to.”
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“It does if you know Daniel.”
“I apparently don’t know Daniel at all.”
That shut him up.
I remembered our wedding.
The rain that afternoon.
Daniel standing at the end of the aisle in his navy suit.
The way his hands had trembled when he took mine.
The first apartment.
Our first Christmas together.
The night I had been sick for three days and he stayed awake beside me.
Eleven years of memories suddenly felt like photographs someone had taken and rearranged.
I couldn’t tell which ones were real.
Then Vanessa reached into her bag.
“There is something else you need to know.”
She placed a small envelope on the table.
My name was written across it.
Not Mrs. Carter.
My maiden name.
The handwriting made my heart stop.
I knew it immediately.
It belonged to my father.
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
My father stood beside a much younger Daniel.
They were outside an old office building.
On the back of the photograph was a date.
Six years before my father’s supposed death.
And beneath it, four words.
She cannot know yet.
I stared at the sentence.
“Why did he write that?”
Michael’s expression changed.
“Because there was something your father didn’t want you to know until you were safe.”
“Safe from what?”
Nobody answered.
Then my phone vibrated.
A new message.
Unknown number.
You should have left the hotel.
Another message appeared immediately.
The drive is not the only thing they want.
I looked up.
“Who is this?”
Michael stood.
“Put the phone away.”
“What?”
“Now.”
His voice had changed.
He wasn’t frightened anymore.
He was alert.
Vanessa turned toward the entrance.
The black sedan was gone.
“Where did he go?” she whispered.
Michael didn’t answer.
He grabbed the USB drive from the table.
I pulled it back.
“No.”
“Listen to me.”
“No. I’ve spent eleven years being told nothing.”
I held the drive tightly.
“If this belongs to me, I’m keeping it.”
Michael stared at me.
Then he nodded.
“Fine.”
He reached into his jacket and placed a key on the table.
“There’s a storage facility twenty minutes from here.”
“What does that have to do with anything?”
“Your father rented a private unit there.”
My heart began pounding.
“He did?”
“Under another name.”
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
The same year as the photograph.
The same year everyone had told me my father was dying.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why didn’t Daniel tell me?”
She looked down.
“Because your father specifically ordered him not to.”
I swallowed hard.
“And if Daniel disobeyed?”
Michael answered.
“Your father said he’d remove Daniel from your life completely.”
I almost laughed again.
“My father controlled my husband’s life?”
“More than you realize.”
I stood.
“I’m going to that storage facility.”
Michael grabbed my wrist.
“You shouldn’t go alone.”
I pulled away.
“I’ve been alone for eleven years.”
Before either of them could respond, my phone vibrated again.
This time, there was a photograph attached.
I opened it.
My blood went cold.
It was a picture of me.
Not from today.
Not from recently.
It had been taken outside my house.
I was carrying groceries.
The timestamp was from three months ago.
Another photograph arrived.
Me leaving a restaurant.
Another.
Me standing beside Daniel outside our house.
Then another.
My hands began shaking.
Someone had been watching me.
For months.
Maybe longer.
Then one final message appeared.
Your husband wasn’t protecting you from us.
I stared at the screen.
A second message followed.
He was protecting us from you.
I felt the room disappear around me.
“What does that mean?” Vanessa whispered.
I didn’t answer.
Because another message had already appeared.
This one contained no photograph.
Only a sentence.
Open the drive before you visit your father’s storage unit.
Then the phone went silent.
I looked at Michael.
“What happens if I open it?”
His face had gone pale.
“You’ll finally know why your father disappeared.”
“And why Daniel married me?”
Michael nodded.
“But there’s something else.”
“What?”
He looked directly into my eyes.
“The drive doesn’t only contain information about your father.”
He paused.
“It contains information about Daniel.”
My fingers tightened around the USB.
“His secrets?”
“No.”
Michael’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“His orders.”
For the first time since I had entered the hotel, Vanessa looked genuinely terrified.
And suddenly I understood.
The woman who had sent Daniel that message at one in the morning hadn’t been trying to seduce my husband.
She had been trying to make sure I found the phone.
She had been trying to lead me here.
And whoever was behind all of this had known exactly what would happen when I finally opened that drive.
I looked down at the USB in my palm.
Then I whispered the question I had been avoiding since I saw my father’s photograph.
“If my father is really dead…”
Michael didn’t blink.
“Then someone has been pretending to be him.”
My phone vibrated one last time.
A new message appeared.
Don’t trust Michael.
And beneath it was a photograph I had never seen before.
My father.
Alive.
Standing beside Daniel.
And standing beside them was the man from the black sedan.
