Part 2: The Secret Vanessa Tried to Bury
Part 2: The Secret Vanessa Tried to Bury
Chapter 3: The Voice Behind the Call
For almost ten seconds after the call ended, I stood completely still.
The house around me felt unfamiliar.
The same walls.
The same furniture.
The same family photos hanging in the hallway.
But suddenly every picture looked like a lie.
The man on the phone knew about the blue folder.
He knew Vanessa had found it.
And he knew I was about to uncover something my own wife had tried to hide from me.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was standing near the doorway of my study, her arms crossed tightly against her body.
She looked smaller than she ever had before.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
“Who was that?” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.”
Her eyes moved toward the floor.
“Michael, please.”
That word.
Please.
I had heard it before.
Usually when she wanted something.
A vacation.
A new car.
A favor.
But this time, it sounded different.
This time, it sounded like a warning.
“Who was that man?”
She swallowed.
“I can’t tell you.”
I stared at her.
After everything that had happened, she still couldn’t tell me.
“You can’t?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
I nodded slowly.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“You were willing to explain yourself after I saw you standing over our daughter with a hanger.”
Her face changed.
“I wasn’t going to hurt her.”
“Then what were you doing?”
Silence.
The silence answered before she did.
“I was angry.”
“At a one-year-old?”
“No.”
She looked away.
“At the papers.”
I felt my hands tighten.
“So you scared our children because of something you found in my office?”
“I panicked.”
“You panicked?”
My voice rose.
“No, Vanessa. Panic is calling someone when you are afraid. Panic is crying. Panic is not raising something over your child.”
She started crying.
But I didn’t move.
For the first time in eight years of marriage, I didn’t rush to comfort her.
Because I couldn’t stop thinking about Noah.
My eight-year-old son standing between a grown woman and his baby sister.
That image was burned into my mind.
“Where is the folder?” I asked.
Vanessa wiped her face.
“I destroyed it.”
I stared at her.
“You destroyed it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
She looked at me.
And then she said something that made my blood run cold.
“Because if you saw what was inside, you would never forgive me.”
Chapter 4: What Vanessa Found
I didn’t sleep that night.
Neither did Vanessa.
The children were staying in our bedroom.
Noah slept on one side of Lily’s crib, holding onto the edge like he was afraid something might happen again.
That broke my heart.
Around 3 a.m., I walked downstairs.
I needed answers.
I opened my laptop.
Then I checked the security cameras.
Something I had never told Vanessa about.
When I traveled for work, I installed cameras around the house for safety.
I never imagined I would need them against my own family.
I opened the footage from earlier that evening.
At first, everything looked normal.
Vanessa cleaning.
Lily crawling around.
Noah doing homework.
Then Vanessa entered my study.
She opened the drawer beside my desk.
I leaned closer.
She wasn’t looking for something.
She knew exactly where to go.
She opened the drawer.
Pulled out the blue folder.
And froze.
Even through the video, I could see her expression change.
Shock.
Fear.
Then anger.
She opened the folder.
Pulled out the first document.
Then the second.
Then she looked toward the hallway.
Toward where the children were playing.
The footage showed her saying something.
I turned up the volume.
Her voice was barely audible.
“No…”
She whispered.
“This can’t be real.”
Then Noah walked into the room.
“Mommy?”
Vanessa immediately closed the folder.
“What are you doing in here?”
Noah pointed toward Lily.
“She followed you.”
The video continued.
Vanessa looked at the children.
Then back at the folder.
Her expression became desperate.
She picked up her phone.
She called someone.
But before the person answered, Noah reached for the folder.
And that was when everything changed.
The folder slipped.
Papers fell onto the floor.
Lily crawled toward them.
Noah picked one up.
And Vanessa panicked.
I stopped the video.
My hands were shaking.
Because now I knew.
She wasn’t angry because the children were misbehaving.
She was terrified because they had seen something.
Something she didn’t want them to see.
I searched through my computer.
Then I found a backup.
Every important document in my study was automatically scanned.
The blue folder had a digital copy.
I opened it.
The first page appeared.
And my entire body went cold.
It was a DNA report.
But it wasn’t mine.
It was about Vanessa.
And another man.
Chapter 5: The Truth About My Marriage
I kept scrolling.
The documents weren’t just DNA results.
They were financial records.
Bank transfers.
Messages.
Photographs.
Evidence.
Evidence of something that had been hidden from me for years.
Then I saw the name.
Ethan Walker.
I knew that name.
Everyone did.
Ethan was Vanessa’s college boyfriend.
The man she told me was just “someone from her past.”
Someone she hadn’t spoken to in years.
At least, that’s what she told me.
But the documents showed something completely different.
There were payments.
Large payments.
From Ethan’s account.
To Vanessa.
Monthly.
For years.
My hands went numb.
Then I saw the date.
The first payment.
Two months before our wedding.
I sat back.
Unable to breathe.
Eight years.
Eight years of marriage.
Eight years of believing I knew my wife.
But apparently, I had been living beside a stranger.
Then I found the document that destroyed everything.
A second DNA test.
A paternity report.
I stared at the name.
Noah Carter.
My son.
My boy.
The child who stood between danger and his little sister.
My hands started shaking.
I clicked the file.
The result loaded.
99.9% probability.
I felt relief for half a second.
Then confusion.
Because if Noah was my son…
Why was this in the folder?
Why did Vanessa panic?
Why was Ethan involved?
Then I found the final document.
A handwritten letter.
From Ethan.
The date was six years ago.
The letter said:
“Vanessa, you promised me you would tell Michael the truth after Noah was born. You can’t keep pretending forever. The agreement was never supposed to last this long.”
I stopped reading.
Agreement.
That word echoed in my head.
What agreement?
What had Vanessa and Ethan planned?
I heard footsteps behind me.
I turned.
Vanessa was standing there.
She knew.
She knew I had found everything.
Her face was covered in tears.
“Michael…”
I closed the laptop.
“What agreement?”
She said nothing.
“What did you promise him?”
Her lips trembled.
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
She looked down.
“I don’t know.”
I stood.
“Eight years?”
“Michael—”
“No.”
My voice was quiet.
Almost calm.
And that seemed to scare her more.
“You let me raise a child while you kept secrets from me.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Noah is your son.”
“I know.”
“Then please understand—”
“Understand what?”
I pointed upstairs.
“Understand why our son had to protect his sister from you?”
She broke down.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt them.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
She covered her mouth.
For several seconds, she couldn’t speak.
Then she whispered:
“Ethan wasn’t trying to take Noah away from you.”
I froze.
“What?”
She looked at me.
“He was trying to protect him.”
The room went silent.
“Protect him from what?”
Vanessa looked toward the front door.
Then toward the stairs.
Then back at me.
And she said:
“Michael… the person you should be afraid of isn’t Ethan.”
My heart stopped.
“Then who?”
She whispered:
“The person who ordered me to hide the folder.”
I stared at her.
“Who?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
And said a name I never expected.
“Your father.”
