Bill Maher FINALLY EXPOSES Why Newsom’s California Is COLLAPSING On Live TV
California’s Progressive Paralysis: Where Good Intentions Go to Die
It is genuinely astonishing to watch the Golden State, once the beacon of American innovation and the “can-do” spirit, slowly suffocate under a mountain of its own well-meaning paperwork. We are witnessing a political class that preaches urgency on every crisis imaginable—climate change, homelessness, racial equity—while simultaneously building a bureaucratic machine designed to ensure nothing ever actually gets solved.
Take the now-infamous San Francisco public toilet saga. The city faced a genuine sanitation crisis, with human waste on the streets becoming a daily hazard. The solution should have been simple: build a toilet. Instead, the project spiraled into a farce of “project management,” “civic design reviews,” and “architecture fees” that drove the price tag to a staggering $1.7 million for a single facility. And the punchline? It wasn’t even built. This is the perfect metaphor for modern California governance: we are more obsessed with the process of doing good than the actual result. We would rather burn millions on consultants and committees to ensure a theoretical toilet is “equitable” and “environmentally sound” than actually provide a place for a human being to relieve themselves.
This paralysis is not just embarrassing; it is actively destroying the very people these progressive leaders claim to champion. In 2021, San Francisco managed to issue only about 2,000 permits for new homes. This artificial scarcity, driven by a maze of 87 required permits and a median approval time of 627 days, has made housing an exclusive luxury. The impact of this regulatory stranglehold is not race-neutral. While politicians give speeches about equity, their policies have presided over a reality where Black homeownership in California has dropped to roughly 35%, significantly lower than the White homeownership rate of over 60%.
The hypocrisy is starkest when you look at who ends up on the street. In San Francisco, Black residents make up only about 6% of the general population, yet they account for a shocking 37% of the homeless population. We have created a system where we refuse to build imperfect housing for people sleeping in the cold because we are too busy regulating the theoretical “perfect” apartments that don’t exist. The median time to approve a house is now 217 days longer than it took to build the entire Empire State Building. We have regulated the bottom rung of the economic ladder out of existence, and the most vulnerable demographic groups are the ones paying the price.
Even on climate change, the state’s existential rallying cry, the bureaucracy is the biggest obstacle. It took 18 years to approve a wind farm in Wyoming that was designed to power California homes. Eighteen years of environmental reviews and pencil-pushing for a project meant to save the environment. If the climate crisis is truly an emergency, why does the government treat green energy projects like crimes that need to be investigated for two decades?
Bill Maher recently joked that if we tried to carve Mount Rushmore today, we’d spend ten years studying the effect of construction noise on woodchuck mating habits and another ten sourcing ethnically appropriate dynamite. It’s funny because it’s true. We have become Gulliver, a giant tied down by thousands of tiny ropes—regulations, committees, and compliance officers—wielded by a “Lilliputian” class of administrators whose entire job is to say “no.” Until California leaders realize that red tape is not a metric of success, the state will continue its slow, expensive, and hypocritical decline.
