Social networking platform X (formerly Twitter) experienced a global service disruption, affecting tens of thousands of users on the evening of March 10, lasting until 3:00 a.m. on March 11.
According to a report from the website Downdetector, the number of users in the US unable to access the platform peaked at 39,021 at 10 a.m. Eastern time.
Billionaire Elon Musk, owner of X, said the incident was the result of a large-scale cyberattack. “We get attacked every day, but this time it was done with a lot of resources. It could have been a large coordinated group or a nation state,” Musk said.
However, cybersecurity experts are skeptical of this claim, saying that similar distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks have been carried out by small groups or individuals.
Reuters quoted a source as saying that X was attacked by multiple DDoS waves starting at around 9:45 a.m., with IP addresses coming from multiple countries.
