Billionaire Elon Musk wants ‘direct democracy’ on Mars
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has predicted that his spacecraft will land on the Red Planet in about two years.
Elon Musk wants to see democracy on Mars if humans settle there, the SpaceX CEO wrote in a post on his X foundation.
“Martians will decide how they are governed. I propose direct democracy, not representative democracy,” Musk posted.
The tech billionaire went on to lay out a timeline for his company’s space missions to the Red Planet. “Unmanned spacecraft landing on Mars in about two years, maybe a manned version flying close to Mars and manned spacecraft heading there in about four years, that’s entirely possible,” he said.
Musk has long advocated for humanity to become a multi-planet species, emphasizing the importance of Mars to ensuring the survival of the human race. SpaceX aims to transport both cargo and people, with initial missions focused on laying the foundations for long-term habitation.
While endorsing Donald Trump as the Republican presidential nominee in September, Musk said “we’ll never get to Mars” if Vice President Kamala Harris wins the November vote.
“When it comes to getting things done, not just nice words, I have no doubt that Mr. Trump will do a much better job,” he stressed. In the end, Mr. Trump defeated Ms. Harris by 312 electoral votes to 226.
In October, Mr Trump promised to “reach Mars” by 2028 if elected to a second term in the White House.
“Elon promised me he would do it,” he said at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. “We’re going to win, and he’s going to get to Mars by the end of our term, which is a big deal, before China, before anybody. I bet on that guy,” the then-presidential candidate added.
Mr Trump has tapped Musk, along with tech tycoon Vivek Ramaswamy, to head a special advisory body tasked with identifying government inefficiencies. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is designed to “dismantle government bureaucracy, cut unnecessary regulations” and reorganize US federal agencies.
