President Donald Trump is escalating efforts to contain a political firestorm that has refused to fade: the renewed scrutiny surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein scandal and the imminent congressional vote to release the full case files. What began as another controversy has now triggered one of the most significant internal clashes of Trump’s second term — including a public feud with one of his staunchest once-allies, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In recent days, Trump has lashed out at Greene, labeling her a “ranting lunatic,” “disgrace,” and even a “traitor” to the Republican Party. Greene, one of the most recognizable MAGA figures since her arrival in Washington in 2021, has broken with Trump by pushing aggressively for the release of all Epstein-related records — a move that many in the White House fear could expose politically damaging implications, even though the president has not been accused of criminal wrongdoing.
The rift underscores a larger concern among Trump’s advisers: Greene may be creating a “permission structure” for other MAGA-aligned lawmakers to dissent publicly, something Trump’s inner circle has long viewed as a red line.
A Party Begins to Fracture
The timing could not be worse for the president. House Republican leaders, under mounting public pressure, are preparing for a vote on Tuesday to force the release of Epstein files — a vote the White House has tried and failed to block for months.

Newly released emails mentioning Trump by name, though not suggesting misconduct, have deepened political anxiety. The White House insists the matter is a “Democrat hoax,” but several Republicans say their voters demand transparency.
Prominent conservative media outlets, including Fox News and Newsmax influencers, have also criticized Trump’s resistance, pointing to broader frustrations over rising prices, foreign policy decisions, and his controversial proposal for a 50-year mortgage program — all issues Greene has seized on.
Her critiques, though often prefaced with “I still support the president, but…”, have resonated with parts of Trump’s base, raising the question of whether she is now more aligned with grassroots sentiment than Trump himself.
The Price Pressures Trump Cannot Ignore
Greene’s comments highlight a growing vulnerability for Trump: inflation. Despite campaign promises to bring down costs, prices on groceries, electricity, and everyday goods have climbed even higher during his current term. Economists and several GOP lawmakers point to Trump’s tariffs as a key cause — a point underscored by Trump’s recent sudden decision to slash tariffs on coffee and some meats.
Critics say this contradicts Trump’s own justification for the tariffs as essential for national security, and suggests they were politically damaging.

Polls Show Erosion in Republican Support
A new national poll reflects the mounting political risks. Only 19% of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the Epstein records. Among Republicans — typically Trump’s most reliable support base — approval is just 44%, far lower than his usual 80–90% backing.
This helps explain why dozens of Republicans, including vulnerable moderates and hardline conservatives, are prepared to vote in favor of releasing the records. While reaching the crucial 290 votes needed to override a presidential veto remains uncertain, congressional leaders say it is possible.
Trump’s Dilemma: A Looming Lame-Duck Shadow
The growing defiance within the GOP has raised concerns inside the White House that Trump may be entering a de facto early lame-duck phase. While far from politically powerless, the president is facing intra-party challenges unlike any in his first term.

The public clash with Greene — someone who once embodied Trump’s most loyal political base — may signal a larger shift. For many Republicans, the Epstein files represent not just a transparency issue but an early test of post-Trump political identity.
As the crucial House vote approaches, Trump’s control over his party will face its most significant challenge yet. Whether he can contain this fracture — or whether the Epstein saga becomes a defining crisis of his second term — will be clearer by week’s end.
