OFFICIAL UPDATE: Man arrested in Kirk shooting. Identity revealed as foreign spy

In a shocking and tragic event, political commentator and conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed during a live appearance at Utah Valley University (UVU) around 12:20 PM Mountain Time. According to law enforcement, Kirk was rushed by private vehicle to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

At a press conference led by Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Bo Mason, officials confirmed that the shooting appeared to be a targeted political assassination, with a single shot fired from an elevated position—possibly a rooftop—on the UVU campus. Over 3,000 people were in attendance at the open-air event, which was hosted by the student group Turning Point USA.

Law enforcement clarified that George Zinn, initially arrested, was not the shooter but is being held for obstruction of justice. A new person of interest is now in custody and being interrogated, though no identity has been released.

FBI Special Agent Robert Bowles confirmed that the bureau is co-leading the investigation and is setting up a digital tip line for the public to share information or media related to the incident. Authorities are actively searching for any accomplices or further threats.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox delivered a powerful and emotional statement, labeling the killing as a “political assassination” and a “dark day for our country.” He urged the public to reflect on the rising political violence in the U.S., referencing other recent assassination attempts. Cox reaffirmed that Utah still holds the death penalty, and vowed that the shooter will be “found, tried, and held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

UVU Vice President Val Peterson emphasized that the university condemns violence and remains committed to free speech and respectful debate on campus. Police Chief Jeff Long expressed deep sorrow and acknowledged that despite preparations and coordination with Kirk’s private security team, the event turned tragic.

Law enforcement is still reviewing security camera footage and investigating all leads. The suspect reportedly wore dark clothing and fired from a distance, with some speculation pointing to a nearby rooftop as the origin of the shot.

Officials urge the public to remain calm, submit any relevant information, and pray for the Kirk family and the nation during this difficult time.
