How Everybody Loves Raymond Honored the Late Sawyer Sweeten During the 30th Anniversary Reunion

The cast of Everybody Loves Raymond came together on November 24th for a special 30th anniversary reunion on CBS, and one of the most emotional moments of the night came when they honored the late Sawyer Sweeten.

Sawyer — who played Geoffrey Barone, one of Ray Romano’s on-screen twin sons — died by suicide in 2015 at just 19 years old. His real-life siblings, Madylin and Sullivan Sweeten, who also starred on the show as Ally and Michael, joined the reunion and spoke openly about their family’s continued dedication to suicide-prevention efforts.

Ray Romano paused the celebration to acknowledge Sawyer’s absence, describing him as a “bright energy and light” on set.

“None of us really expected what happened,” Romano said, reflecting on Sawyer’s death. “I try to think about the good moments, and often those were here on the set.”

Madylin Sweeten added that her family has become deeply committed to spreading awareness about mental health and suicide prevention.
She emphasized how crucial it is for people to seek help:

“Suicide is the second leading cause of death between ages 18 and 25. But 90% of people who seek treatment are cured,” she explained. “So many messages we get say, ‘I’m grateful to have heard about your brother — he saved my life.’”

When asked how fans can support their efforts, Madylin shared that the family works closely with the National Suicide Prevention Hotline and raises funds each year through special “Sawyer” T-shirts dedicated to their brother.

“All of the proceeds go directly to suicide-prevention work,” she added.

Everybody Loves Raymond, which premiered in 1996 and ran for nine seasons, earned 15 Emmy Awards during its celebrated run. But for the cast and fans alike, Sawyer Sweeten remains one of the show’s most cherished memories — a reminder of the importance of compassion, connection, and mental-health support.
