ESPN Just Dropped New Leaked Footage of Kawhi Leonard in Prison
In what is being described as one of the biggest NBA scandals since the Donald Sterling controversy, investigative journalist Pablo Torre revealed alarming details about a financial arrangement between Kawhi Leonard, the Los Angeles Clippers, and a now-bankrupt company called Aspiration. According to Torre’s investigation, which was based on over 3,000 pages of documents and interviews with multiple former Aspiration employees, Leonard signed a four-year, $28 million endorsement deal with the company. However, this deal required virtually no work from Leonard—no commercials, social media posts, appearances, or promotional efforts of any kind. Even more suspicious was a clause in the contract that stated Leonard’s payments would be voided if he was no longer with the Clippers, which is highly irregular for an endorsement agreement.
What makes this situation especially explosive is the financial entanglement between Leonard, Aspiration, and Clippers owner Steve Ballmer. Ballmer, a billionaire and former CEO of Microsoft, had invested $50 million into Aspiration around the same time the Clippers signed a $300 million sponsorship deal with the company. Not long after, Leonard received an additional $20 million in Aspiration stock, bringing his total compensation to $48 million—nearly equal to Ballmer’s original investment. When Aspiration filed for bankruptcy in March 2025, documents revealed that the Clippers were owed $30.1 million, Ballmer’s entertainment company was owed $11 million, and Leonard’s own company, KL2Aspire LLC, was owed $7 million. These overlapping financial interests suggest a level of coordination that may have been designed to circumvent the NBA’s salary cap rules.
The NBA responded swiftly, launching a formal investigation on September 4, 2025. The league hired the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, the same firm used in the Donald Sterling and Robert Sarver cases—both of which resulted in forced sales of teams. This move signals the seriousness of the situation. The central issue is whether this endorsement deal was a disguised method to pay Leonard outside of the salary cap, which would be a major violation of league rules. Commissioner Adam Silver has previously called salary cap circumvention a “cardinal sin,” and the league has shown in the past that it is willing to impose harsh penalties, including the loss of draft picks, voiding of player contracts, and massive fines.
Steve Ballmer and the Clippers have denied any wrongdoing. Ballmer claims he was simply an investor in Aspiration and had no control over the company’s decisions. He has portrayed himself as a victim of fraud, asserting that he had no knowledge of the details surrounding Leonard’s deal. However, critics have pointed out that it’s hard to believe a businessman of Ballmer’s stature could be so unaware of a $48 million transaction involving his team’s star player and a company he heavily funded. The defense also failed to explain why Leonard received such large sums for no apparent promotional work, especially given that endorsement deals typically involve tangible marketing contributions from athletes.
Leonard’s uncle and business manager, Dennis Robertson, has also come under renewed scrutiny. Back in 2019, he was accused of requesting improper benefits during Leonard’s free agency, including guaranteed endorsement deals and even part-ownership of a team. While those allegations were dismissed at the time, the current case has drawn striking parallels, raising the possibility of a long-standing pattern of circumventing league rules.
If the allegations are proven true, the consequences could be devastating. The Clippers may lose future first-round draft picks, face millions in fines, and potentially see Leonard’s contract voided—turning him into a free agent and throwing the franchise into disarray. Leonard himself, already criticized for his frequent absences and questionable commitment, could suffer irreparable damage to his reputation. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith has gone so far as to label him “the worst superstar in sports,” citing this scandal as further evidence of a pattern of getting paid without contributing on or off the court.
Ultimately, this case has far-reaching implications for the entire NBA. If wealthy owners can bypass the salary cap through off-the-books deals with third-party companies, it threatens the league’s competitive balance and integrity. How the NBA handles this scandal will set a precedent for the future—and the basketball world is watching closely.
