John Barrasso on Obamacare Subsidies and Healthcare Reform

Senator Barrasso, a physician, critically evaluated the effectiveness of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), arguing that its underlying failures necessitate major structural reform rather than continued reliance on federal subsidies.

Critique of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare)

Senator Barrasso asserted that the ACA failed to deliver on its primary promises and has financially benefited insurance corporations at the expense of American families.

Broken Promises: He highlighted President Obama’s promises that Americans could “keep your doctor, you could keep your policy,” and that insurance costs would go down by $2,500 per family. Barrasso stated the “exact opposite happened,” with costs doubling.

Corporate Enrichment: He noted that health insurance companies’ stocks have increased by “500 to 1,000%” since the ACA became law, arguing that the government has been propping up the system’s failures by sending money to “national insurance companies.”

Unsustainable Subsidies: He specified that the current subsidies, including the “Biden COVID bonus subsidies” set to expire, cover about 80% of the cost of the insurance, proving the plan was “never affordable” and is a “failing plan” causing hardship.

Republican Healthcare Vision

When challenged by Welker about the lack of a current Republican replacement plan 15 years after the ACA’s passage, Senator Barrasso outlined the principles guiding the Republican approach to healthcare.

Focus on Cost Reduction and Control: The core goal is to “lower the cost of health care in America” by giving people choice and control over their decisions, rather than relying on bureaucrats.

Market-Based Reform: He supports giving people money to make their own decisions and buy what works best for their families, contrasting this with the “one-size-fits-all government-run healthcare” favored by progressive Democrats like Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

Opposing Subsidy Extensions: He views extending the current subsidies as an inadequate solution, stating he will not vote to “subsidize this failure” unless Democrats propose a bill that genuinely “lowers the cost of care.”

Stance on the Filibuster

The Senator also addressed the calls from President Trump to eliminate the Senate filibuster, defending the procedural tool as a vital mechanism for conservatives.

Defense of the Filibuster: Barrasso stated he has “always supported the filibuster” as a tool to “prevent Democrats from doing things that I think would be very bad for the country.”

Blocking Democratic Agenda: He identified specific Democratic goals that the filibuster is intended to block, including making D.C. and Puerto Rico states (which would add four new Democratic senators), eliminating voter ID, and packing the Supreme Court with four new members.

Commitment: He stated that a majority of Republicans in the Senate support the filibuster and that he expects it to remain intact, declining to rule out a vote to end it, while expressing confidence in its current support.
