Caitlin Clark Shines in Heartwarming Short Film “Back to School with Lily”
Basketball sensation Caitlin Clark has added another accomplishment to her growing list — but this time, it’s not on the court. The WNBA rookie and fan-favorite has taken a surprising and emotional turn into acting, starring in the newly released short film “Back to School with Lily”, which premiered online this week to widespread acclaim.
The 15-minute film, produced by a collaboration between a nonprofit children’s organization and a digital media studio, follows the story of a young girl named Lily, a shy elementary school student returning to school after a tough year. As Lily struggles to find her confidence, she imagines a world where Caitlin Clark is her mentor, guiding her through the first day with encouragement, humor, and plenty of basketball analogies.

An Unexpected Role
Known for her fierce competitiveness and record-breaking three-point shooting at Iowa and now in the WNBA, Caitlin Clark surprises audiences with her natural screen presence and genuine warmth in the film.
“When I read the script, I was instantly in,” Clark said in a behind-the-scenes interview. “It was about more than basketball — it was about showing kids how to believe in themselves. I saw a lot of myself in Lily.”
In the short film, Clark appears in dreamlike sequences, offering Lily advice on handling bullies, speaking up in class, and even scoring points in gym. One touching scene shows Clark kneeling next to Lily in the school hallway, telling her:
“Every great player had to start somewhere. You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to show up.”
Fans and critics alike have praised Clark’s performance as “sincere, grounded, and inspiring.”
A Viral Sensation
Since its release on YouTube and social media platforms, “Back to School with Lily” has gone viral, racking up over 5 million views in its first 48 hours. Teachers, parents, and school counselors have shared the film widely as a motivational tool for students facing anxiety about returning to the classroom.
“This is exactly the kind of story we need right now,” one elementary school principal tweeted. “Caitlin Clark is a role model both on and off the court.”
A New Chapter for Clark?
While Clark has made it clear that basketball remains her top priority, fans are already speculating about whether a future in film or TV could be on the horizon.
“It was fun,” she admitted. “I wouldn’t call myself an actress, but I’d love to do more projects like this — especially if they make a difference.”
The Bigger Picture
The film is part of a broader campaign encouraging student mental wellness and confidence-building at the start of the school year. Proceeds from branded merchandise and donations are going toward after-school programs in underserved communities — a cause close to Clark’s heart.
As one young fan wrote in a YouTube comment:
“I was scared to go back to school, but after watching this, I feel like Caitlin is cheering me on.”
And in many ways, she is.
