PATRICK Mahomes turned heads by calling someone out – and that someone would simply be himself.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ star quarterback made his displeasure clear over his performance last season, which ended in a brutal Super Bowl 59 defeat.

Mahomes and the Chiefs made it to their third straight Super Bowl in 2024.

But the two-time NFL MVP had down numbers from his previous campaign that saw him win Super Bowl 58 MVP.

Last season, Mahomes threw for 3,928 yards, marking the first time as a full-time starting quarterback that he failed to amass the 4,000-yard mark.

And after two productive playoff games, the veteran was sacked five times and threw two interceptions in the Chiefs’ lowly 40-22 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in February’s Super Bowl.

On Tuesday, Mahomes shared that not only does his team have to improve from last year, but also himself, in an honest admission.

“There’s stuff we’ve got to get better at,” Mahomes said in an interview with USA Today.

“Especially myself.

“There’s plays on the football field that I didn’t make last year, that I’ve made in previous years.

“At the end of the day, I’m going to do whatever it takes to win, whether that’s passing for a lot of yards, not passing for a lot of yards.”

Mahomes continued, saying that he has to make better throws, especially when there’s a potential downfield pass to be made.

“But I think if I play better, that’s going to make it better for the team.

“So, I’ve got to be better at executing whenever the shots are there, making those throws.

“Because that’s going to alleviate pressure on our defense and make them play more free and make the team play more free.”

His 6.8 yards per attempt mark from last year was a career-worst.

Reid and Mahomes have continued to share their goal of throwing the ball further down the field to the likes of Travis KelceXavier Worthy, among others.

In order to do that, the Chiefs’ offensive line will have to improve, and the franchise has revamped the unit this offseason, drafting tackle Josh Simmons in the first round of April’s NFL Draft and transitioning Kingsley Suamataia to left guard.

Mahomes acknowledged that his mentality following a Super Bowl loss is different than any other feeling going into a season.

“It just gives you a little extra in some of the workouts and those film sessions, to try to find the little things to get even better,” Mahomes said.
