DETROIT — The Cavs will be without Max Strus for Friday’s matchup against the Detroit Pistons, as the sharpshooter sits out the second night of a back-to-back due to right ankle injury management.

He joins Ty Jerome (knee soreness) and Jaylon Tyson (left knee bone bruise) on the sideline, leaving the Cavs without a key piece in their perimeter attack.

For a player who fought his way back onto the court after missing the first 27 games of the season with a right ankle injury, Strus — who is celebrating his 29th birthday on Friday —doesn’t take any opportunity to play the game he loves lightly.

“His leg could be falling off, and he’s not gonna tell me,” Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson said before Friday’s game against Detroit. “But we had talked to him for a while about getting a game and seeing if he can recharge the batteries. That was a tough one to get him over the line, I’ll tell you that. He’s probably in some pickup game right now in Cleveland at the YMCA. But, yeah, sometimes you gotta be like, ‘Come on, Max, this is gonna help you in the long run.’

“I know I see him in the weight room and recovery [room]. He’s, you know, on our team top three in terms of every off day [getting work in]. There’s no off days for him, really. He’s impeccable about taking care of his body.”

In Thursday’s win over the San Antonio Spurs, he showed no obvious signs of being limited — beyond a black wrap on his ankle during timeouts and a hand wrap that he’s sported during the Cavs’ grueling March stretch after banging bodies with an Orlando Magic player before their 10-day road trip.
