Some stories hit too close to the heart. This is one of them.
While most families celebrated on the Fourth of July, the Kansas City Chiefs Hunt family faced every parent’s nightmare. A young 9-year-old girl in their family, Janie Hunt, was among the many lives lost in the devastating Texas floods that tore through Hill Country over the weekend.
Tavia Hunt, wife of the owner of the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL, confirmed the heartbreaking loss. Janie, a camper at Camp Mystic in Kerr County, was one of dozens of girls who went missing during the flash flood. She didn’t make it home.

Severe flooding overwhelmed Kerr County and surrounding areas on July 4. The Guadalupe River surged beyond its banks following intense rainfall. Search and rescue teams from Boerne worked through the chaos, navigating floodwaters in inflatable boats. Despite their best efforts, many campers were unaccounted for. Families are still waiting for news.
Tavia Hunt shared a gut-wrenching message following Janie’s death.“Our hearts are broken by the devastation from the floods in Wimberley and the tragic loss of so many lives, including a precious little Hunt cousin,” she wrote. “Along with several friends’ little girls.”

She didn’t hold back her pain. She asked a question many are now asking.
“How do we trust a God who is supposed to be good, all-knowing, and all-powerful, but who allows such terrible things to happen, even to children?”
Her words didn’t try to hide the pain. Instead, she offered something real.
“If your heart is broken, I assure you God is near. He is gentle with your wounds. And He is still worthy—even when your soul is struggling to believe it. Trust doesn’t mean you’re over the pain; it means you’re handing it to the only One who can hold it with love and restore what was lost.”
Officials have confirmed more than 70 deaths so far. With several still missing, the toll could rise.
This wasn’t just another summer storm. It was a disaster that stole futures and shattered families. For the NFL’s Hunt family and many others across Texas, it turned a holiday into a lifelong scar.
Our thoughts remain with every family facing the unthinkable.
