The Golden State Warriors announce a key player’s injury. An update on guard Gary Payton II’s injury has been released by the Golden State Warriors.

Warriors guard Gary Payton II tore a ligament in his thumb during Tuesday’s loss to the Miami Heat. The Golden State Warriors began a six-game road trip on Saturday, but they have already lost two straight games. Now, as they prepare to play the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday, they have some bad news.

“Guy Gary Payton II, a guard for the Warriors, suffers a partial tear in his left thumb ligament. The injury happened in Miami during Tuesday’s game against the Heat. Payton II will be reassessed in a week and will not participate in tomorrow’s game against the Pelicans in New Orleans, according to a statement from Warriors PR.

It ended with awful news, of course, but Payton II earned his first start since January 31 on Tuesday. It was terrible timing for the Warriors when Payton II tore a partial ligament in his thumb with ten games remaining in the regular season, but many are hopeful that he will be able to return following his re-evaluation in a week.

The 32-year-old guard, who averages 6.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 0.8 steals in just 14.9 minutes per game while shooting 58.5% from the field, will probably miss at least the next four games for Golden State, but getting him back in time for the postseason is undoubtedly the top priority. Payton II has been the cornerstone of Golden State’s backcourt defense this season, and the Warriors will probably struggle in that area while he is out.
