NBA Announces Kawhi Leonard’s Lifetime Ban After His $28,000,000 Fraud Scandal
Kawhi Leonard, the famously reserved NBA superstar and two-time champion, has found himself at the center of what could be the most shocking scandal in league history. He has reportedly been handed a lifetime ban from the NBA after being implicated in a $28 million fraud scheme tied to a bankrupt green banking company called Aspiration.
The story unraveled when investigative journalist Pablo Torre discovered Leonard’s secret company, KL2 Aspire LLC, listed as a creditor in Aspiration’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in March 2025. This company, registered under Leonard’s name using his jersey number, was owed the final $7 million installment of a four-year, $28 million endorsement deal. However, Torre’s investigation, which included over 3,000 pages of documents and testimony from former employees, revealed that Leonard never once promoted the company—no social media posts, no interviews, no appearances, not even a single like or retweet. The contract was essentially a “no-show” job, specifically structured to avoid NBA salary cap rules.
Aspiration, once hailed as an environmentally conscious financial startup backed by celebrities like Robert Downey Jr., Leonardo DiCaprio, and Drake, was exposed as a fraudulent operation. Their promises to plant trees and offset carbon emissions were largely unverified or entirely fabricated. By 2025, federal investigations revealed that co-founder Joe Sanberg had defrauded investors of nearly $250 million, and up to 90% of the company’s reported deals were fake.
The investigation’s most damning revelation was the connection between Leonard’s secret deal and Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, the sixth richest person in the world. Ballmer was not only the largest investor in Aspiration, contributing $50 million through his LLC, but also orchestrated the Clipper’s $300 million stadium sponsorship deal with the company. Ballmer’s investment directly enabled the secret payments to Leonard, and internal emails showed Ballmer actively helping Aspiration build business relationships.
Leonard signed his Clippers contract extension in August 2021. One month later, Ballmer finalized his investment in Aspiration. Two months after that, Leonard registered his LLC. The timing, the connections, and the structure of the endorsement contract—all pointed to a coordinated attempt to circumvent the NBA salary cap.
The contract was unlike anything seen in sports endorsements: Leonard had full control over all promotional content, could veto any action, and had no performance obligations. He never fulfilled the minimal requirements outlined in the deal, yet Aspiration prioritized his payments over employees and other creditors—even as the company collapsed financially.
Former employees testified that internally, Leonard’s deal was openly referred to as a “salary cap workaround.” Meanwhile, Leonard’s uncle and adviser, Uncle Dennis, allegedly made frequent calls demanding payment, which Aspiration treated as a top priority—especially given their ties to Ballmer and the Clippers.
When Aspiration filed for bankruptcy, the Clippers were also listed as a $30 million creditor, further exposing the deep entanglement between the team, Leonard, and the fraudulent company. The NBA’s investigation into the matter has reportedly concluded with Leonard being banned for life, and the league may soon issue additional sanctions against the Clippers and potentially Steve Ballmer himself.
This scandal is not just a story of fraud—it’s a carefully constructed scheme involving one of the NBA’s most powerful owners, a major star, and a now-disgraced environmental startup. It could reshape how the league handles third-party endorsements, team ownership ethics, and the future of salary cap enforcement in professional sports.
