Reese told fans that her $73,000 salary did not cover her $96,000-per-year rent and everyday bills.

Steph Curry was quick to give his thoughts on the pay gap.

Steph Curry is one of the most outspoken NBA stars when it comes to discussion around closing the pay gap for WNBA players, with Angel Reese recently revealing she can’t even cover her everyday bills on her current wage.

During the warm up for the WNBA All-Star game last weekend, players including Reese wore all-black t-shirts with the message ‘pay us what you owe us’.

Players and the union are stuck in negotiations over fair pay for WNBA players.

Under the current WNBA Collective Bargaining Agreement, players are entitled to 25 per cent of profits, so long as the league meets its revenue targets each year.

According to IndyStar, one player per team can earn up to $250,000 per year, with rookie contracts starting at $72,000.

But this is in stark contrast to the NBA, where players receive 50 per cent of all revenue generated regardless of targets.

Last year, 23-year-old Reese told an Instagram live stream that her $73,000 salary did not cover her $96,000-per-year rent.

On ESPN she said: “I just hope y’all know the WNBA don’t pay my bills at all.

“I don’t even think that pays one of my bills, [the salary] isn’t enough to pay my car note, I wouldn’t even be able to eat, I wouldn’t be able to live.

“I’m living beyond my means!”

Through other endorsements and a spot in the Unrivaled three-on-three league, Reese earns a six-figure sum, which allows her to afford her rent.

What did Curry say?

Golden State Warriors icon Curry endorsed the closing of the pay gap on Women’s Equality Day in 2018.

He wrote in the Players’ Tribune: “I think it’s important that we all come together to figure out how we can make that possible, as soon as possible.

“Not just as ‘fathers of daughters,’ or for those sorts of reasons.

“And not just on Women’s Equality Day. Every day – that’s when we need to be working to close the pay gap in this country.

“Because every day is when the pay gap is affecting women. And every day is when the pay gap is sending the wrong message to women about who they are, and how they’re valued, and what they can or cannot become.”

Curry said that he had been heavily influenced by his mum Sonya and wife Ayesha.

He is one of the greatest players in the world and has won four NBA Championship titles with the Warriors.

The 37-year-old was also named as MVP in both 2015 and 2016, before winning an Olympic gold medal in 2024.

Angel Reese claimed she can't cover her everyday bills on $73,000 salary as WNBA players launch protest during All-Star gameAngel Reese claimed she can't cover her everyday bills on $73,000 salary as WNBA players launch protest during All-Star game

WNBA players including Angel Reese wore t-shirts in protest during the league’s All-Star festivities this weekend.

Players and the player’s union are locked in negotiations over salaries and used the All-Star game to make their position perfectly clear. Stars like Napheesa Collier, Allisha Gray, Kelsey Plum and Kelsey Mitchell were in action as Team Collier beat Team Clark in Indianapolis on Saturday, showcasing the top talent in the WNBA.

However the backdrop to the showpiece game were the ongoing talks over fair pay for WNBA players, with Collier saying before the game: “This is where the money’s at, so both sides are going to fight really hard for it. So we just have to make them know that we’re not backing down on this point.”

The dispute centres around the current WNBA Collective Bargaining Agreement which entitles players to 25 per cent of profits on the condition of the league meeting its revenue targets each year. According to IndyStar, one player per team can earn up to $250,000 per year, with rookie contracts starting at $72,000. And the agreement does not compare well to the NBA, where players receive 50 per cent of all revenue generated regardless of targets.

To make their point, the All-Star players all wore black t-shirts during their warm-ups reading: “Pay Us What You Owe Us”, generating plenty of media attention.

And the extent of the issue for players was highlighted by Reese, 23, who told an Instagram live stream last year that her $73,000 salary at the time hardly covered her $8,000 monthly rent which amounts to $96,000 per year.

(via ESPN): “I just hope y’all know the WNBA don’t pay my bills at all.

“I don’t even think that pays one of my bills, [the salary] isn’t enough to pay my car note, I wouldn’t even be able to eat, I wouldn’t be able to live,” she added. “I’m living beyond my means!”

With other endorsements and a place in the Unrivaled 3-on-3 league earns Reese six figures, she said in May 2024, making clear she was thankful for her income. “Being able to play for what, four to five months, and get $75,000 on top of the other endorsements that I’m doing, I think it’s a plus for me,” she explained. “Being able to make six figures within three months [in Unrivaled], being able to be housed in Miami, just being able to get better …. I think it’s amazing.”

Steph Curry has clear LeBron James stance as trade to Golden State Warriors rumoured

Curry and James were both instrumental as the US secured gold at the Olympics in Paris last year having served as NBA rivals for years

Steph Curry has made his LeBron James stance more than clear with the LA Lakers star rumoured to be a potential new trade target for the Golden State Warriors.

James is reported to be currently exploring a trade away from Los Angeles in what would be the shock of the off-season.

But it was during the 2023/24 NBA season that Golden State Warriors governor Joe Lacob reportedly proposed a trade with the Lakers that would see James move to San Francisco. The Lakers and James’ agent Rich Paul told the Warriors than the NBA icon wouldn’t entertain a switch, and talks ended there.

Almost a year later, Curry says be believed James would never leave the Lakers, and that playing together in the NBA seemed unlikely.

“That’s as far as it got from a year ago,” Curry told ESPN back in February, “because it sounded outlandish when I first heard about it. I never thought he’d leave the Lakers. And I obviously said I never really wanted to leave here.”

Could Curry and James link up at the Warriors?

American TV personality, and co-host of First Things First, Nick Wright has suggested that a switch to the Warriors could be possible this summer as trade rumours continue to swirl.

At 41 years of age, the market for James is small, meaning a team could justify trading him if they have title aspirations in the near future.

The NBA’s all-time leading scorer, who once considered a shock contract offer from the NFL, has also recently signed a two-year extension worth $104m, which limits options further.

Wright, though, believes he knows of two teams who could make the trade work.

The Warriors or the Knicks

Speaking on First Things First, Wright said: “What should the Warriors or the [New York] Knicks do to get LeBron James? Both of them, if LeBron wanted to go there, could get him, and the teams would make sense.

“The Warriors one is simple – it’s Jimmy Butler for LeBron. I know the Lakers, evidently, desperately want to hold on to 2027 cap space. If you trade for Jimmy Butler, you would still have 2027 cap space because he has two years left on his deal.”

Butler has a similar contract to James, and currently has two years left on his deal with the Warriors, during which he’ll make just over $108m.

“Some would argue Jimmy fits better with Luka [Doncic] than LeBron, I wouldn’t be one of those people, but if LeBron wants to leave, that would be a legitimate return,” Wright added.

Knicks trade more realistic

That said, while fans would be desperate to see both Curry and James link up in the NBA, Wright believes a switch to the Knicks is more “realistic”.

“The other one, I think, is more interesting and more realistic, and it’s LeBron for Karl-Anthony Towns,” Wright added.

“The Lakers get much younger, you don’t get a defensive center, but you get a stretch five, and it’s something that is interesting for them at least to evaluate for the next couple of years before Towns has a player option.”

The Lakers failed to make it beyond the first round of the western conference playoffs, losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves, who then knocked the Warriors out in the conference semi-finals.

WNBA star Angel Reese previously revealed that her basketball wage did not cover her bills.

Reese, 22, is a forward for WNBA side the Chicago Sky and is widely regarded as one of the brightest prospects in the league.

And despite her popularity growing in recent years, she has been outspoken about salaries in women’s basketball.

In October 2024, she took to social media to explain how her paycheck of $73,000 hardly covered her $8,000 monthly rent which amounts to $96,000 per year.

“I just hope y’all know the WNBA don’t pay my bills at all,” Reese said during an Instagram livestream last year, via ESPN.

“I don’t even think that pays one of my bills, [the salary] isn’t enough to pay my car note, I wouldn’t even be able to eat, I wouldn’t be able to live,” she added.

“I’m living beyond my means!” joked the WNBA star.

And that was not the first time that she publicly discussed players’ wages in the WNBA.

But the 22-year-old has also explained how she is grateful for the amount she earns.

“Being able to play for what, four to five months, and get $75,000 on top of the other endorsements that I’m doing, I think it’s a plus for me,” she said in May 2024.

“Being able to make six figures within three months [in Unrivaled], being able to be housed in Miami, just being able to get better …. I think it’s amazing.”

Unrivaled is a 3-on-3 basketball league which features 36 WNBA players and offers the highest salaries in women’s sports history – with the average salary reportedly worth around $220,000 – close to the WNBA’s maximum base salary – according to AP.

While MARCA reports that the 36 players are paid at least $100,000 – and are also offered equity in the organisation.

However, the aforementioned figures are still a far cry away from the wages received by NBA stars, with Golden State Warriors point guard Steph Curry reportedly having earned $51.9m during the 2023/24 season.

In comparison, the highest-paid WNBA star was the Las Vegas Aces player Jackie Young who reportedly earns around $252,000 per year on her current contract.

WNBA star Angel Reese has revealed her current basketball salary does not cover her bills and she ‘wouldn’t be able to live’ off her $73,000 paycheck.

Reese has become one of the most recognisable faces of the WNBA in her rookie season, but the 22-year-old’s performances on the court are not enough to get by.

The Chicago Sky’s All-Star has claimed her monthly rent payment is $8,000, meaning that an entire year’s worth of living costs her $96,000 which is significantly more than her entire salary.

“I just hope y’all know the WNBA don’t pay my bills at all,” she said during a recent Instagram livestream, via ESPN.

“I don’t even think that pays one of my bills. Her salary] isn’t enough to pay my car note, I wouldn’t even be able to eat, I wouldn’t be able to live,” she added.

However, Reese has reiterated that she is incredibly grateful for the situation she finds herself in, and her WNBA money is a ‘bonus’.

Speaking to ESPN in May: “Being able to play for what, four to five months, and get $75,000 on top of the other endorsements that I’m doing, I think it’s a plus for me.”

“Being able to make six figures within three months [in Unrivaled], being able to be housed in Miami, just being able to get better …. I think it’s amazing.”

Due to her recent rise to stardom, Reese has deals and partnerships with brands including Reebok, Beats by Dre, and of course, Reese’s chocolates.

Jackie Young is the current leading earner in the WNBA, as the Las Vegas Aces star earned a reported $250,000 from her contract this season.

However, Young’s earnings are minnowed by the NBA’s highest-paid athletes with Steph Curry taking home a whopping reported $51.9 million from the Golden State Warriors.
