Things got way too heated at Chiefs camp 👀
What started as just another day turned into something no one expected…
Andy Reid has a rule of thumb when it comes to Patrick Mahomes: if the quarterback signs off, the franchise usually follows. That’s how Josh Simmons ended up in Kansas City. Mahomes doesn’t just play on Sundays – he studies draft boards in the spring like a scout with too much coffee. So when the Chiefs traded back and grabbed Simmons with the 32nd pick in April, Reid wasn’t surprised that Mahomes already knew the kid’s tape inside out.
And Kansas City badly needed one. Super Bowl LIX wasn’t just a loss – it was a film session nightmare. The Eagles sacked Mahomes six times, hit him eleven more, and made the NFL’s best player look ordinary. The Chiefs had been patchworking their offensive line for years, even yanking All-Pro guard Joe Thuney outside to tackle when things got desperate. Reid knew the stop-gap approach had run its course. If Mahomes was going to win another ring, it had to start in the trenches.
Fast forward to late July, and Simmons wasn’t just holding his own – he was stealing the show. Reports out of camp said he stonewalled rookie Ashton Gillotte, even tossing him to the ground in one-on-one drills. Training camp isn’t supposed to look like a bar fight. It’s where plays get drawn, chemistry gets built, and tempers…well, sometimes they snap faster than the ball itself. That snap came from Patrick Mahomes, who rolled out of the pocket like any other drill. But mid-rep, chaos broke loose. Rookie lineman Josh Simmons got tangled with Ashton Gillotte.
Gillotte tugged his jersey, shoved him, and the rookie lineman snapped. Simmons fired a right-handed punch at Gillotte’s helmet. The defender responded in kind, and suddenly both were yanking jerseys and throwing fists while teammates scrambled to pull them apart. The two ended up wrestling like they were auditioning for WWE instead of Andy Reid’s depth chart. And Reid? He had to step in and separate his own guys. Not exactly the play design he had in mind.
The irony? Just a week earlier, Simmons was being compared to Trent Williams by Jason Kelce, with George Karlaftis nodding in agreement. High praise. But Tuesday’s fight was a reminder: hype gets you headlines, discipline keeps you starting jobs. For Andy Reid, it’s a balancing act – protecting Mahomes’ blindside with a young star while making sure the rookie doesn’t knock out his teammates in the process. But the drama didn’t end there. The brawl wasn’t the only gut punch. On the other side of the field, Mahomes’ receiving corps took a hit.

Mahomes watches camp turn from reps to reality check
In the back of the end zone, Hollywood Brown came up limping after a route. Trainers rushed over, and soon enough, he was carted off with what looked like a right lower leg injury. The new WR1, gone for the day, was sitting up front on the cart while his teammates tried to reset.

It’s another cruel twist for a receiver who has already struggled with durability. Signed on a one-year deal, he was supposed to be part of the trio with Rashee Rice and rookie Xavier Worthy that reignited the downfield threat Kansas City has lacked. Instead, he was sitting in the front of a cart, staring at yet another setback.

For Mahomes, it was a practice that started like any other – and ended with a fight, a scare, and way too many questions for a single afternoon. Andy Reid can patch schemes, Mahomes can create magic, but even for the NFL’s gold standard, some problems can’t be scrambled away from. Training camp isn’t supposed to feel like crisis management – but Tuesday in St. Joseph, it sure did.
