Keanu Reeves is reflecting on one of his most beloved sports films, The Replacements. During his appearance on the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce, the Matrix star opened up about what made the 2000 football comedy so special — and why its story still resonates deeply with him today.
“I think The Replacements is really about second chances,” Reeves said. “It’s about a group of people who, for different reasons, never got the opportunity to do what they loved. And then suddenly, they get this shot. It’s funny, it’s wild, it’s underdog energy, but it’s also really heartfelt.”
Reeves played Shane Falco, a washed-up former quarterback who’s brought in during a players’ strike to lead a ragtag team of misfits. The film, co-starring Gene Hackman, Orlando Jones, and Jon Favreau, became a cult favorite over time, celebrated for its humor and inspiring message.
The actor also reflected on his experience working with Hackman, calling it one of the highlights of his career.
“Gene Hackman was amazing,” Reeves recalled. “He brought such class and warmth to the movie. He’s one of those legends who can just say a line and make you feel everything. Working with him was an honor.”
Reeves admitted that the energy on set was contagious. Despite not being a real athlete, he threw himself into the football scenes with passion and gratitude.
“I was terrible at first,” he laughed. “But the stunt guys and coaches were great. They made me look like I could actually throw a ball. It was so much fun — I loved every minute of it.”
When asked about the film’s enduring popularity, Reeves said he believes it’s because people relate to the idea of redemption.
“We’ve all been there — wanting a do-over, a second chance,” he said. “The movie has humor, sure, but it also has that message of never giving up on yourself, no matter how far down you think you are.”
Reeves also reflected on how The Replacements fits into his broader body of work.

“It’s a film with heart,” he said. “People talk about The Matrix or John Wick, but The Replacements has its own kind of soul. It’s about courage, connection, and joy — and that’s something I’ll always be proud to have been part of.”
Over two decades later, The Replacements remains one of Keanu Reeves’ most uplifting roles — and his reflections show why it still holds a special place in fans’ hearts today.
