Viral “Giant Cat” Patch Finds New Hope and Health After Emotional Shelter Rescue
Richmond, VA — When a woman marched into the Richmond Animal Care Center cradling what looked like an ordinary house cat, shelter staff expected a routine intake. But moments later, everyone’s jaws dropped as a massive feline, nearly twice the size of any cat the staff had ever seen, was gently set on the floor.
The animal, surprisingly heavy and largely immobile, was named Patch. Brought in by a woman who brusquely declared herself “tired of taking care of him,” Patch’s arrival turned heads for both his unique size and the air of neglect that surrounded his story. Shelter staff, led by animal-loving employee Clara, felt immediate concern—not just for Patch’s physical discomfort, but for the events that led to this situation.
After basic intake questions, the woman revealed that Patch had belonged to her late mother and that she now felt no responsibility toward him. Impatient to leave, she completed paperwork and departed without a second glance. As Patch struggled to move, it was clear that his condition was more than mere obesity—it was a cry for help.
Clara, well-known among her colleagues for her love of cats, took Patch’s story to heart. Unable to adopt due to her husband’s allergies, she made it her mission to find him the loving care he needed. The shelter quickly realized that none of their carriers fit Patch, finally finding a comfortable “bed” for him in a large bowl.
Inspired to act, Clara and her team launched a Facebook campaign, sharing Patch’s photo and plea for a new home: “Patch, a sweet cat who needs a master.” The post went viral overnight, drawing thousands of supportive comments, shares, and adoption offers from across the nation.
Among those touched was Kay Ford, a 50-year-old animal lover in Yorkshire, whose daughter alerted her to Patch’s plight. Kay was immediately captivated by Patch’s photos and reached out to the shelter, eager to offer him a fresh start. After a thorough adoption screening, Kay was approved: Patch was going home.
Though Patch’s size posed unique challenges—including the inability to fit into a normal cat carrier—he soon settled into Kay’s house alongside her other pets. The transition was carefully managed. Kay consulted with a veterinarian, who prescribed a strict diet plan and exercise regimen tailored to Patch’s special needs. At first, Patch struggled to adapt, but Kay’s care and patience paid off.
Determined to inspire others, Kay documented Patch’s weight loss journey on a dedicated Facebook page, amassing over 20,000 followers. Updates chronicled Patch’s gradual return to health—a process marked by both triumphs and challenges, from his early lethargy and confusion to his newfound ability to play, jump, and climb stairs.
Clara, who had first championed Patch at the shelter, kept in touch with frequent visits, watching her former charge blossom in his new home. Kay’s daughters, too, became attached to Patch, making him a beloved member of their extended family.
Eventually, Kay joyfully announced that Patch had shed 17 pounds through healthy eating, physical activity, and lots of loving support. The once-sedentary cat was now able to climb, play, and enjoy life—a transformation that moved supporters across the country.
Kay used Patch’s page not only to share his progress but to educate others about responsible pet ownership, especially the dangers of overfeeding. “Overfeeding is not an act of love,” Kay often wrote, “but something that can bring heartache—and it’s our duty to care for animals wisely.”
Today, Patch thrives in his new family, a symbol of resilience and the power of second chances. Clara and Kay’s efforts—along with the kindness of thousands—have given this once-neglected cat a chance at a healthy, happy life and have inspired pet owners everywhere to do better by their furry companions.
