Young Entrepreneur Interviews SHAQ
From the Court to the Boardroom: The Unstoppable Journey of Shaquille O’Neal
The sun was blazing over Atlanta, Georgia, as a young entrepreneur prepared to meet one of the most iconic figures in sports and business history—Dr. Shaquille O’Neal. Known to fans simply as “Shaq,” this towering presence had not only dominated the NBA for nearly two decades but had also built a business empire worth over $500 million. Today, the entrepreneur was on a mission: to uncover the secrets behind Shaq’s unparalleled success both on and off the court.

As the camera rolled, the interview began with a warm introduction. “Who am I here with today?” the entrepreneur asked, grinning up at the 7-foot-1 legend.
“My name is Dr. Shaquille O’Neal,” Shaq replied with his trademark charisma.
The conversation quickly shifted to his career. “What industry did you decide to pursue a career in?” the entrepreneur asked.
Shaq leaned back, his voice brimming with confidence. “A lot of them. DJing, law enforcement, food and beverages, you name it.”
It was clear from the outset that Shaq was no ordinary athlete. He had ventured far beyond basketball, delving into multiple industries and succeeding in all of them. But what had driven him to pursue such a multifaceted career?
“I was killing your favorite NBA player,” Shaq said with a laugh when asked about his life before becoming a business mogul. It was a reminder of his dominance on the court, where he had earned four NBA championships and a place among the greatest athletes of all time.
But what truly set Shaq apart was his mindset. “I was a thief,” he admitted, explaining how he had “stolen” from the greats who came before him. “Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Muhammad Ali—I studied them all and took what I could learn from them to create my own path.”
This ability to learn and adapt had not only made Shaq a basketball legend but also a business powerhouse. At one point, he owned 155 Five Guys franchises—a feat few could even dream of. When asked about his secret to scaling businesses, Shaq summed it up in one word: “Delegation.”
“You can’t be in 155 places at once,” he explained. “But I know somebody who can.” This philosophy of building strong teams and trusting others had been a cornerstone of his success, both on the court and in the boardroom.
Shaq’s journey to financial freedom, however, hadn’t been without its challenges. “Did you come from a lot of money?” the entrepreneur asked.
“No, never,” Shaq replied. His humble beginnings had instilled in him a drive to succeed. “My motivation was always being able to get my mother what she wants,” he said. It was this sense of purpose that had propelled him through a 19-year NBA career and into the world of business.

But Shaq wasn’t just about making money; he was also about keeping it. He shared a sobering statistic: one in three NFL players goes broke within three to five years of retiring. How had he managed to avoid that fate?
“The secret is financial literacy,” Shaq said. He emphasized the importance of understanding concepts like annuities and saving for the future. “Learn this word: annuity,” he advised, challenging viewers to educate themselves on financial planning.
The interview also touched on Shaq’s biggest regrets. One of them was not investing in Starbucks when he had the chance. “Howard Schultz wanted to open Starbucks in the hood,” Shaq recalled. “I didn’t pull the trigger, and then Magic Johnson opened 155 Starbucks locations.” It was a lesson in the importance of recognizing opportunities and taking calculated risks.
Despite his enormous success, Shaq remained humble and grounded. “Do you believe in God?” the entrepreneur asked.
“Of course,” Shaq replied without hesitation. “None of this is possible without God.” His faith had been a guiding force throughout his career, providing him with the strength and perspective to navigate life’s challenges.
As the conversation continued, Shaq shared his thoughts on entrepreneurship. “Do you think everyone is built for entrepreneurship?” the entrepreneur asked.
“Yes, I do,” Shaq said. He encouraged aspiring entrepreneurs to write down their plans, study successful people, and add their unique touch to what they learned. “There will be ups and downs,” he warned. “But as long as you believe, you’ll make it to the top.”
The interview concluded with Shaq offering a piece of advice that encapsulated his entire philosophy: “Always hire people who are smarter than you.” It was a reminder that success is never a solo journey; it’s about building a team of talented individuals who share your vision and can help bring it to life.
As the cameras stopped rolling, the young entrepreneur couldn’t help but feel inspired. Shaq had not only shared his secrets to success but had also demonstrated the power of resilience, humility, and a relentless drive to achieve greatness. From dominating the NBA to building a business empire, Shaquille O’Neal had proven that with the right mindset, anything is possible.
And as the entrepreneur walked away, one thought lingered: if Shaq could do it, so could anyone willing to put in the work, learn from the best, and never stop believing in their dreams.
