In creating the legendary assassin John Wick, Keanu Reeves didn’t just act the part—he lived it. He spent months training in Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, firearms, driving, and countless combat skills to deliver absolute authenticity on screen.
More Than Just an Actor – Almost a Stuntman
According to director Chad Stahelski and the 8711 stunt team, Reeves was trained not as a Hollywood star but as a stuntman. “We threw away the idea of treating him as just an actor. We trained him like one of us. He did his own falls, rolls, weapon handling, driving, even crashing cars—it was all Keanu,” Stahelski explained.

What made the process even more demanding was the filming style. Many John Wick fight scenes run up to 30 seconds without a cut, requiring Reeves to fight, move, reload, and react in one continuous take.
Discipline and Mental Fortitude
Before each film, Reeves trained for four to five months, four to five hours a day. “He shows up early, works as hard as possible, and never complains,” one stunt coordinator recalled. For Keanu, training wasn’t just preparation—it was joy. “I’m a Virgo. I like puzzles, tasks, trying to get better at something. That’s who I am,” Reeves admitted.

Even in his fifties, Reeves embraced the grind. “Age makes things harder, but technique balances it out. The more I train, the more trust Chad and the stunt team put in me. And with that comes more responsibility.”
Learning From the Masters of Jiu-Jitsu
To sharpen his grappling skills, Reeves trained directly with the Machado Brothers, world-renowned masters of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. They worked on escapes, transitions, counters, and submissions—refining his ability to flow between positions.
“Keanu has incredible focus and determination. He absorbs everything quickly,” one of the Machados said. Beyond technique, they taught him about rhythm, breath, and the balance between speed and control. This fluidity became the backbone of his on-screen fights.
When Co-Stars Enter the “Wick Program”
Reeves wasn’t alone in his training. Co-stars like Common and Ruby Rose also underwent the intense “Wick program.” Common recalled: “I strained my neck so bad I couldn’t turn it. The next day, we were back in headlocks. No room for whining.”

Ruby Rose, with a background in boxing and martial arts, was trained to elevate her strengths. “It was like learning a new language,” she said. Together with Reeves, the cast and stunt team treated fight choreography like a dance—where timing, flow, and improvisation were everything.
John Wick – The Dance of Violence
What audiences witness on screen is not just raw violence but a carefully choreographed “dance of combat.” As one stuntman put it: “If someone is a little off, the other person adjusts, and the rhythm continues. Keanu picked that up immediately. He fights like he’s dancing.”
And that’s why the action in John Wick has redefined Hollywood standards—blending cinematic precision with the dedication of an actor who trained like a true warrior.
