Annabel Croft Calls for More Slice Backhands in Coco Gauff’s Game
British tennis commentator and former pro Annabel Croft has called on Coco Gauff to integrate one specific shot more regularly into her game: the slice backhand. During Gauff’s recent straight-sets victory over Lucia Bronzetti at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, Croft praised the American’s occasional use of the shot but emphasized that it could become a far more valuable weapon in her growing arsenal.
Gauff, currently ranked among the top players in the world, cruised through the match 6–2, 6–4 with powerful baseline play and her signature athleticism. However, it was the rare slice backhand—deployed at key moments—that caught Croft’s attention in the commentary booth.
“I would love to see that slice backhand used a lot more,” Croft said during the match broadcast. “It can cause so many problems for players, especially when used tactically against their forehand wing.”
Croft referenced other top players, such as Karolína Muchová, who consistently use the slice to great effect. The slice can neutralize pace, break up rhythm, and force opponents out of position, particularly when executed with precision and variety.
Why the Slice Backhand Matters
The slice backhand is an underrated tool in the modern power game. While Gauff is known for her explosive forehand and quick movement, Croft believes that adding more variety—especially with the slice—can elevate her already elite game.
“Against strong hitters, a low and skidding slice can be incredibly disruptive,” Croft explained. “It’s not about using it all the time, but having it as a go-to option when the rally calls for change.”
Analysts and fans alike have noted that Gauff occasionally struggles when opponents vary the pace or use angles to pull her wide. A reliable slice backhand would allow her to better control the tempo, change direction during points, and even set up offensive opportunities with her forehand.
Gauff’s Evolving Game
Since her breakout at Wimbledon in 2019, Gauff has grown into one of the sport’s biggest stars. At only 21, she already has a Grand Slam title under her belt and continues to improve technically and tactically.
Over the past year, her forehand—once considered a weakness—has shown notable improvements, thanks in part to her work with coach Brad Gilbert. Now, voices like Croft’s are suggesting the next step: more strategic shot selection.
“She has all the tools,” Croft added. “Adding more slice into matches will only make her tougher to beat.”
What’s Next for Gauff?
With the U.S. Open just weeks away, Gauff remains one of the tournament favorites. Whether or not she takes Croft’s advice remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—her game is still evolving, and the best may be yet to come.
Fans will be watching closely to see if Gauff incorporates the slice backhand more frequently in upcoming matches. If she does, it could be one of the final ingredients needed to make her a dominant force on every surface.
