Former Coach of Elena Rybakina, Stefano Vukov, Reinstated After Suspension Lifted
Stefano Vukov, the former coach of Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, has officially been cleared to return to WTA-sanctioned events after a months-long suspension was quietly lifted by tennis authorities earlier this week.
Vukov had been under temporary suspension since January 2025, following accusations of violating the WTA’s code of conduct. The exact nature of the alleged misconduct was never publicly detailed, fueling speculation throughout the tennis world about the seriousness and validity of the claims.
This week, however, the WTA confirmed in a short statement that the suspension had been formally lifted and that Vukov is “eligible to return to professional events effective immediately.” No disciplinary action or penalty will be recorded against him.
“We have reviewed the matter in accordance with internal protocols,” the WTA stated. “There will be no further comment at this time.”
Lingering Questions Surround the Initial Allegations
Vukov’s suspension — initially described as “administrative” and “precautionary” — sparked waves of online debate and media scrutiny, especially given his high-profile role in Rybakina’s rise to Grand Slam success.
The WTA never confirmed whether the accusations involved inappropriate behavior, verbal abuse, or other forms of misconduct, and Vukov himself has consistently denied wrongdoing, maintaining that the suspension was based on “unsubstantiated and misleading” claims.
In a post on his official Instagram shortly after his reinstatement, Vukov wrote:
“The past months have been extremely challenging for me, both personally and professionally. I’m relieved that this matter has come to an end, and I thank those who stood by me when the facts weren’t clear. I’ve always held deep respect for the sport and its standards.”
A Fractured Professional Relationship
The suspension came shortly after Rybakina unexpectedly announced a split from Vukov in early February — ending one of the more successful player-coach partnerships in recent years. The timing raised eyebrows, though neither party confirmed whether the allegations were a factor in the separation.
While Rybakina has gone on to find success under a new coaching team, Vukov’s absence from the tour has been notable — especially as conversations around coach conduct and emotional abuse in tennis have intensified.
Reactions from the Tennis World
Reactions to Vukov’s reinstatement have been mixed. Some players and coaches have welcomed the decision, emphasizing due process and the importance of not rushing to judgment based on limited information. Others, however, argue that the lack of transparency from the WTA leaves open too many questions.
“It’s good he’s cleared — but no one knows what he was accused of,” one former WTA player told Tennis Weekly under condition of anonymity. “That helps no one. Not him, not the tour, not the players.”
As the dust settles, Vukov’s return will be closely watched — not just for his coaching contributions, but for how the sport continues to handle sensitive internal investigations.
