For five months, the Middle East lived under a fragile pause that never truly became peace. Then, in a matter of hours, everything changed. The A-10 Thunderbolt II, commonly known as the Warthog, had been fighting for survival inside the American military bureaucracy for more than a decade. The fighting continued for weeks before a ceasefire was reached on April 8. However, the pause remained extremely fragile. A ceasefire agreement between governments does not automatically end military activity on the ground, especially when powerful proxy networks remain active.
Iran had spent decades building what it called an “axis of resistance,” a network of armed groups and allied organizations across the Middle East. These groups provided Tehran with the ability to project influence without always deploying its own conventional military forces directly.
Inside Iraq, this network became especially important. Various militia groups operated under the broader umbrella of the Popular Mobilization Forces, a structure that had been officially integrated into Iraq’s security system after its formation during the fight against ISIS. However, several powerful factions maintained long-standing connections with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
This created a complicated battlefield.
These groups were officially part of Iraq’s security structure, yet some factions maintained independent relationships with Tehran. For the United States, the challenge was determining how to respond to attacks from organizations that operated within a complex political environment.
After the ceasefire, attacks against American forces did not disappear.
According to military assessments, Iran-aligned militias conducted hundreds of attacks against U.S. personnel and facilities in Iraq during the months following the major fighting. The attacks included drones, rockets, and attempts to strike American positions.
The number that changed the way officials viewed the situation was more than 600 attempted attacks in approximately three months. This demonstrated that although the headline war appeared quieter, another conflict was continuing beneath the surface.

The A-10 was not built to look elegant.
It was built to survive.
The aircraft’s titanium armored cockpit protected pilots from enemy fire. Its redundant systems allowed it to continue flying after suffering damage that would destroy other aircraft. Its two engines, reinforced structure, and backup controls gave pilots a chance to return home from missions that seemed impossible.
That philosophy became valuable again in the Middle East.
Modern conflicts are not always decided by speed alone.
Sometimes the ability to remain over a battlefield, observe patiently, and strike precisely matters more.
The A-10 could stay airborne for extended periods, searching for targets and providing immediate support when needed.
Against scattered militia positions, mobile launchers, drones, and small maritime threats, that capability became extremely important.
The aircraft that was designed to fight tanks in Europe found a new mission thousands of miles away.
It became a weapon against a completely different type of enemy.
