Brittney Griner Speaks Out on Caitlin Clark Incident: “If I Were Caitlin, She’d Have a Broken Nose”
In the aftermath of a controversial on-court clash between rookie sensation Caitlin Clark and fellow WNBA player Jacy Sheldon, basketball star Brittney Griner has spoken out, expressing strong support for Clark and condemning what she views as unsportsmanlike conduct.
The incident occurred during a recent WNBA game when Sheldon was seen making physical contact with Clark in a way many fans and analysts described as excessive and aggressive. The moment quickly went viral, reigniting debates around how Clark has been targeted on the court since entering the league. The rookie guard, known for her poise and sharp shooting, appeared shaken but remained composed, opting not to retaliate.
Brittney Griner, a seasoned WNBA veteran and a vocal advocate for fair play and athlete safety, didn’t hold back when asked about the situation during a media appearance, particularly in light of her recent decision to sit out the 2025 All-Star Game due to injury.
“If I were Caitlin,” Griner said firmly, “she [Sheldon] would’ve had a broken nose if she played me like that. You don’t get to play dirty and walk away with it. There’s a line, and that crossed it.”
Griner’s remarks have sparked widespread discussion online, with fans divided over the tone of her statement. Some have praised her for defending a younger player in a tough league, while others questioned the implications of promoting a retaliatory mindset.
The Phoenix Mercury center elaborated further, adding that while physicality is part of professional basketball, there’s a difference between tough defense and intentional harm. “We all play hard. It’s part of the game. But targeting someone, especially a rookie, with that kind of energy is unnecessary,” Griner said.
Clark, for her part, has remained characteristically reserved. When asked about the contact with Sheldon, she responded: “It’s the WNBA. Things get physical. I’m focused on helping my team win.” Despite being the center of numerous high-profile moments this season—both positive and contentious—Clark has maintained a composed public demeanor.
This season, the former Iowa Hawkeye has drawn massive attention, boosting league viewership and attendance. However, with that spotlight has come scrutiny, and many argue that the physical toll she’s taking stems from both competitive intensity and subtle resentment from more established players.
Griner’s comments, while blunt, have added a new dimension to that conversation. A multiple-time All-Star, Olympic gold medalist, and advocate for player rights, she has long been a key voice in the league. Her choice to speak out during a week she was slated to play in the All-Star Game underscores the significance she places on the issue.
As the season continues, eyes will be on both Caitlin Clark and the league’s response to increasingly physical play. The broader WNBA community, including players like Griner, seem eager to ensure the game remains both competitive and respectful.
