King Charles has initiated the formal process to strip his brother, Prince Andrew, of his royal titles and honors. From now on, Andrew will be known simply as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. In addition, he will be required to vacate the Royal Lodge, the expansive mansion in Windsor Park where he has lived rent-free—or at least without paying directly.

This move comes amid ongoing controversies surrounding Andrew’s association with Jeffrey Epstein. Unlike previous voluntary arrangements, this action is mandated by the King, effectively forcing Andrew to relinquish his titles and privileges. While some of Andrew’s other titles, such as the Duke of York and his Scottish titles, were earned, the Prince title was hereditary—making this stripping particularly noteworthy.

Andrew will be relocated to a smaller residence on the Sandringham estate, which is privately owned by the King, ensuring that no public funds are involved. Royal commentators describe this as a form of “domestic exile”: he will no longer hold royal titles and will be largely excluded from public royal events, although he will retain a private home.

Regarding his former wife, Sarah Ferguson, sources indicate that she will make her own arrangements but may live with Andrew at Sandringham if she chooses. Their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, will retain their titles and continue to live under the normal protocols established for the children of a sovereign.

Royal experts point out that the late Queen was more lenient in previous years, possibly taking Andrew at his word, but recent revelations and ongoing public pressure have made this step necessary. The King’s decision is also seen as an effort to protect the monarchy’s reputation amid continued scrutiny and calls for accountability.
