“Peanuts and Monkeys”: Botched Investigation into Charlie Kirk’s Killing Sparks Outrage and Political Chaos
There’s a saying in film and video production: “When you pay peanuts, expect a few monkeys.” That adage is now painfully relevant as the investigation into the assassination of right-wing provocateur Charlie Kirk spirals into farce. In a move that would be comical if not so tragic, a podcaster and a supermarket bag boy are reportedly overseeing the hunt for Kirk’s killer—a domestic terrorist whose motives remain a mystery.
A Comedy of Errors
The investigation’s missteps began with Cash Patel, whose bombastic incompetence is matched only by his willingness to fire qualified professionals. Patel ousted the head of Utah’s FBI field office—a Pakistani woman and counterterrorism expert—at the apparent bidding of Trump and Bondi. The result? A team ill-equipped for the job, more interested in ideology than expertise.
Meanwhile, “Bag Boy” brings his own brand of expertise, presumably honed in aisle nine, to the table. But with the right so eager to blame the left, any tenuous clue will do. The Times reported ammunition engraved with transgender and anti-fascist slogans was found at the scene—only for officials to later admit the evidence was misread or misinterpreted. The rush to pin this tragedy on leftists is matched only by the right’s silence when politically motivated murders are committed by their own.

Selective Outrage and Political Hypocrisy
The right wasted no time using Kirk’s murder as a rallying cry against the left, ignoring the lack of verified information about the suspect or motive. When a right-wing extremist killed in Minnesota, conservative voices were eerily silent. And when it comes to gun control, the right’s silence is deafening.
Cash Patel’s investigation has now cycled through three “persons of interest,” including a photographer mistaken for a tactical gear suspect. Even former FBI assistant director Chris Swecker, a veteran of more competent days, doubts the quality of the investigation. Inconsistencies in suspect descriptions could prove exculpatory in court, raising further doubts about the process.

Escalating Tensions and Dangerous Fallout
The fallout is spreading. Six historically Black colleges and universities received threats today, forcing campus closures. With both the shooter and Kirk being white, the connection to these threats is illogical—but logic is in short supply.
Trump’s initial response was to weaponize Kirk’s death against the left in a blatant, divisive attack. The backlash was so severe, he was forced to walk back his remarks. What’s clear is that the conservative movement in America has been sacrificed for a grotesque, hateful entity that cares little for democracy, community, or the nation itself.

A Call for Nonviolence
As Kirk’s death becomes yet another excuse to ramp up political hatred, one thing is desperately needed: a clear, unified call from Christian churches to uphold the nonviolent mandate of Christianity and the doctrine of loving one’s enemies. The silence is deafening.
We’re still waiting.
