SEVASTOPOL — For over a decade, Crimea stood as the crown jewel of Vladimir Putin’s revanchist foreign policy, a heavily fortified bastion projecting Russian power across the Black Sea and the psychological anchor of his imperial ambitions. Today, that fortress is showing unprecedented fractures. A systematic, multi-phased Ukrainian campaign has begun to strip away the peninsula’s strategic utility, plunging its critical infrastructure into what local occupation officials quietly admit is an industrial coma and transforming the occupied territory from a vital staging ground into an unsustainable economic and military liability.
The signs of a shifting reality are visible across the peninsula. Long a favorite summer resort destination for Russia’s elite, Crimea’s tourism season has been effectively canceled this year, with an estimated 80 percent of hotel reservations abandoned and summer camps shuttered. In Sevastopol and other major hubs, a strict state of emergency governs daily life. Civilian fuel sales have been severely restricted, rationing residents to a meager 20 liters of gasoline per week, as remaining reserves are frantically diverted to state and military functions.
