Part 2_ I caught my husband having an affair with my stepmother, but he is earnestly begging for forgiveness; I wonder if I should forgive them…
Part 2

For three days, I avoided making any decision.
That was the hardest part.
People always say that when someone hurts you deeply, you should “take time to heal.” But nobody tells you how painful that time actually is.
Because when everything you believed about your life collapses, you don’t just lose a person.
You lose memories.
You lose the meaning behind old moments.
You lose the ability to look back without questioning everything.
Every photo of Daniel and me suddenly felt like evidence from another life.
Every anniversary card.
Every vacation picture.
Every “I love you” text.
I kept asking myself the same question over and over:
Was any of it real?
I stayed at the hotel because I couldn’t stand being inside our house.
Our house.
That word felt strange.
It wasn’t my home anymore.
It was the place where my husband and my stepmother had betrayed me.
Every room carried a memory.
The kitchen where Linda and I used to drink coffee together.
The living room where Daniel and I celebrated holidays.
The bedroom where I discovered the truth.
I couldn’t understand how a place filled with love could suddenly feel like a crime scene.
Daniel continued trying to reach me.
Every morning, there were messages waiting on my phone.
“Please talk to me.”
“I know I destroyed everything.”
“I will do anything to prove I’m sorry.”
“I can’t lose you.”
Before this happened, those words would have meant everything to me.
Now they felt empty.
Because apologies are easy.
Regret is easy.
Changing is the part that matters.
And I had no idea if Daniel was capable of that.
On the fourth day, I agreed to meet him.
Not because I had forgiven him.
Not because I wanted him back.
I needed answers.
We met at a small coffee shop near my office.
The moment he walked in, I noticed something I had never seen before.
Daniel looked older.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
The confidence he always carried was gone.
He looked like a man who finally realized he could lose everything.
He sat across from me.
“Thank you for meeting me.”
I didn’t respond.
The silence between us was uncomfortable.
But for the first time, I didn’t rush to fill it.
I let him feel it.
“I know you hate me,” he said.
“I don’t hate you.”
He looked surprised.
“I don’t have enough energy to hate you,” I continued. “I’m just disappointed.”
That hurt him.
I could see it.
But I needed him to understand something.
“You didn’t just cheat on me, Daniel.”
He looked down.
“You betrayed me with someone who was family.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
I leaned forward.
“You don’t understand because you still have both of us. You have Linda, who you chose. And you have me, who you’re trying to get back.”
“I ended it with her.”
“After you got caught.”
He had no answer.
Because it was true.
I studied his face.
The face I had kissed thousands of times.
The face I trusted.
The face that had lied to me.
“Why her?”
That was the question I had been carrying.
Out of everyone in the world, why Linda?
Daniel stayed quiet for a long time.
Finally, he spoke.
“I don’t know.”
I almost laughed.
“You don’t know?”
“I was lonely.”
The second he said it, I felt something break.
Not sadness.
Anger.
“Lonely?”
My voice became sharper.
“Daniel, I was your wife. I came home every night. I supported your career. I stood beside you when your father was sick. I moved across the country for you.”
“I know.”
“Then how were you lonely?”
He looked ashamed.
“I stopped talking to you. I stopped telling you what I was feeling. And instead of fixing that, I made the worst choice possible.”
I looked away.
Because part of me wanted to believe him.
That was the terrifying part.
Even after everything, there was still a part of me that loved him.
Love doesn’t disappear the second someone hurts you.
I wished it did.
It would have made everything easier.
But love and pain can exist at the same time.
Then I asked the question that had been bothering me since Linda’s message.
“What did Linda mean when she said there was something I didn’t know?”
Daniel’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
And that small reaction told me everything.
“What?”
He looked nervous.
“Daniel.”
He took a deep breath.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.”
My stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?”
He looked down at the table.
“Linda didn’t tell you because she was afraid you would never forgive her.”
My heart started racing.
“What did she do?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said:
“She knew about my affair before you did.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“She knew I was unhappy.”
I shook my head.
“That’s not what I asked.”
Daniel swallowed.
“She encouraged me to leave you.”
For a moment, I couldn’t speak.
The noise of the coffee shop disappeared.
All I could hear was my own heartbeat.
“She encouraged you?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Before the affair started.”
I felt sick.
Because suddenly, everything looked different.
The late-night conversations between Linda and Daniel.
The times she defended him during our arguments.
The moments she told me I needed to “understand my husband better.”
She wasn’t helping my marriage.
She was slowly weakening it.
“She told me that maybe you and I weren’t meant to be together,” Daniel admitted.
I stood up.
I couldn’t sit there anymore.
“Emily, please.”
“No.”
People turned to look.
I didn’t care.
“Do you understand what you’re telling me?”
He looked at me.
“You didn’t just cheat with her. You let her influence you against me.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
My hands were shaking.
“I trusted her.”
Daniel looked devastated.
“I’m sorry.”
But sorry wasn’t enough.
Not anymore.
I left the coffee shop without another word.
That night, I finally answered Linda’s message.
I wrote:
“Tell me everything.”
She replied almost immediately.
Too quickly.
Like she had been waiting.
She asked if we could meet.
I almost refused.
But I needed to know.
The next afternoon, I met Linda at a park.
For the first time in years, I didn’t hug her.
I didn’t smile.
I didn’t ask how she was.
I simply sat across from her.
She looked broken.
Older.
Different.
“Emily…”
“Start talking.”
She wiped her eyes.
“I know you hate me.”
“I don’t know what I feel anymore.”
That was the truth.
Because hate would have been easier.
“I need to know why.”
Linda looked down.
And then she said something I never expected.
“Because I was jealous of you.”
I froze.
“Jealous?”
“Yes.”
She took a shaky breath.
“You had everything I never had.”
I stared at her.
“You had a husband who loved you. A successful career. A future. You were young. You were happy.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“So you destroyed my life because you were jealous?”
“No.”
Her voice cracked.
“I didn’t plan to fall for him.”
I looked away.
“I don’t want excuses.”
“I know.”
She cried quietly.
“But there’s something else you need to know.”
“What?”
She reached into her purse and pulled out an envelope.
My heart immediately sank.
“What is that?”
“Something Daniel never told you.”
I didn’t want to touch it.
I didn’t want another secret.
I had already lost enough.
But my hand moved anyway.
Inside the envelope was a printed document.
A document with Daniel’s name on it.
And when I read the first few lines, my entire body went cold.
Because it wasn’t just about the affair.
It was about money.
And betrayal.
And a plan that had started months before I ever discovered them.
Daniel had not simply been cheating.
He had been preparing for a life without me.
A life where I was the person left behind.
I read the document again and again, hoping I misunderstood.
But I didn’t.
My husband had been secretly making financial arrangements.
He had been moving assets.
He had been preparing for a separation.
And the worst part?
Linda had helped him.
I looked at her.
“You both planned this?”
She started crying.
“No.”
“Then explain.”
She opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, my phone rang.
It was Daniel.
I looked at the screen.
Then at Linda.
Then back at the phone.
Something inside me changed.
For days, I had been asking whether I should forgive them.
But suddenly, I realized I had been asking the wrong question.
The real question was:
Why was I trying to save a marriage that two people had already tried to destroy?
I answered the call.
“Emily?”
Daniel’s voice sounded desperate.
“We need to talk.”
I looked down at the papers in my hand.
“No, Daniel.”
A long silence followed.
“Then what do you want?”
I closed my eyes.
And for the first time since discovering the betrayal, I felt calm.
“I want the truth.”
His breathing stopped.
“Because if you lie to me one more time…”
I paused.
“…you won’t lose me because of the affair.”
I looked at Linda.
“You’ll lose me because you never respected me enough to tell me the truth.”
The next words Daniel spoke changed everything.
Because he finally admitted there was another secret.
A secret bigger than the affair.
A secret that involved the reason he chose Linda in the first place.
And when I heard it, I realized my marriage had been falling apart long before I ever opened that bedroom door.
