As the 2025 NFL season kicks off, one question is echoing louder than ever across the league: Is Patrick Mahomes still the king of quarterbacks, or has someone else earned the crown?

For the past several years, Mahomes has been the gold standard. With two MVP awards, three Super Bowl titles, and a highlight reel that seems to defy the laws of physics, he’s not just a quarterback—he’s a generational talent. But in the ever-evolving world of the NFL, even legends can face challengers.

NFL analyst Henry McKenna weighed in on the debate. “Mahomes hasn’t exactly slipped—he’s still elite. But the league is catching up,” McKenna said. “Players like Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, and now C.J. Stroud are closing the gap. And let’s not forget Lamar Jackson, who’s having one of the most efficient seasons of his career.”

McKenna noted that Mahomes’ 2024 campaign, while strong, lacked the explosiveness of previous years. The Chiefs’ offense dealt with inconsistencies, and while Mahomes led them to yet another playoff run, he looked more human than we’re used to seeing.

“This isn’t about Mahomes falling off,” McKenna explained. “It’s about the rest of the league rising to his level. That’s a testament to how much he’s influenced the game.”

Still, when it comes to clutch moments, no one commands more fear than Mahomes. Whether it’s a 4th-and-10 with the season on the line or a two-minute drill in the Super Bowl, he’s delivered time and again. That kind of magic is hard to dethrone.

So, is it time to crown a new QB king?

McKenna believes we’re in a transition period. “Until someone takes the throne in both performance and championship pedigree, Mahomes is still the guy. But 2025 could be the year someone finally steps up and makes a real case.”

For now, the crown may still rest on Mahomes’ head—but the challengers are knocking.
