Part 2- My Husband Let His Sisters Beat Me — Then Everything Changed At Our Anniversary Dinner
My Husband Let His Sisters Beat Me — Then Everything Changed At Our Anniversary Dinner
Part 2

The morning of my tenth wedding anniversary began with silence.
Not the peaceful kind.
The kind of silence that makes your chest feel heavy before you even open your eyes.
I woke up staring at the ceiling of the bedroom I had shared with Brandon for almost a decade.
For years, that room had represented everything I thought I had built.
Our first apartment.
Our first Christmas tree.
The nights we stayed awake talking about our future.
The place where we promised we would grow old together.
But that morning, lying beside a man who felt like a stranger, I felt something I had never felt before.
Not sadness.
Not anger.
Something much deeper.
I felt empty.
I slowly turned my head and looked at Brandon sleeping beside me.
For a moment, I searched for the man I married.
I searched for the person who once held my hand during my father’s surgery.
The man who used to bring me soup when I was sick.
The man who cried when we lost our first pregnancy.
I wanted to believe that person was still there.
I wanted to believe this was just a terrible period in our marriage.
But then I remembered the bleach-stained dress downstairs.
I remembered Veronica’s voice.
I remembered Candace’s smile.
And most of all, I remembered Brandon saying:
“You’re too sensitive.”
Something inside me finally stopped making excuses for him.
I got out of bed quietly.
Downstairs, I heard voices.
Veronica and Candace were already in my house.
Of course they were.
They had stopped being guests a long time ago.
They acted like they owned the place.
When I walked into the kitchen, they both looked at me.
And I immediately knew something was wrong.
They were smiling.
Not friendly smiles.
The kind of smiles people wear when they know something you don’t.
“Good morning,” Veronica said.
Her eyes moved toward my face.
Toward the dark circles under my eyes.
Toward the exhaustion I couldn’t hide.
“Big day today.”
I didn’t answer.
I poured myself coffee.
Candace leaned against the counter.
“Are you going to apologize to everyone tonight?”
I looked at her.
“For what?”
She laughed.
“Still pretending?”
My hand tightened around the coffee cup.
“I don’t know what you want from me.”
Veronica walked closer.
“What we want is for you to stop acting like you’re better than us.”
I stared at her.
“I have never acted that way.”
She smiled.
“That’s the problem, Grace. You don’t understand your position.”
My stomach turned.
“My position?”
Before she could answer, Brandon walked into the kitchen.
He looked at all three of us.
But instead of asking why his sisters were cornering his wife on their anniversary morning, he looked at me.
“What is going on now?”
I almost laughed.
Because somehow, no matter what happened, I was always the problem.
“Your sisters are insulting me.”
Brandon rubbed his forehead.
“Grace, not today.”
Not today.
Those words hurt.
Because they meant my pain was inconvenient.
He cared more about keeping the appearance of a perfect anniversary than protecting me.
“I need you to understand something,” he said.
I looked at him.
“What?”
“Tonight is important. My family will be there. Your family will be there. Don’t ruin this.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Ruin this?”
He stepped closer.
“Yes. No arguing. No emotional scenes. No making my sisters look bad.”
I stared at him.
“What about making me feel safe?”
His expression changed.
Only for a second.
Then it disappeared.
“You always make everything about you.”
That sentence broke something inside me.
Because for ten years, I had spent my entire life making everything about him.
His happiness.
His comfort.
His family.
His reputation.
And somehow, I was still selfish.
My phone rang.
I looked down.
Natalie.
My twin sister.
For a moment, I felt relief.
A small piece of myself returned.
I answered quickly.
“Hey, Nat.”
Her voice immediately changed.
“Grace?”
“I’m okay.”
I said it automatically.
I hated that I said it automatically.
Because I wasn’t okay.
I hadn’t been okay for years.
“Why do you sound like that?” Natalie asked.
I looked toward Brandon.
He was watching me.
Waiting.
Controlling.
“I’ll call you later.”
“Grace, wait—”
I hung up.
The guilt hit me instantly.
Natalie had always known me better than anyone.
Even when I lied, she knew.
And I had just pushed her away because I was afraid of what would happen if Brandon heard the truth.
A few hours later, I was standing in front of the mirror trying to cover my face.
My eye was swollen.
The bruise had become darker.
I used makeup.
Then more makeup.
Then more.
But no amount of foundation could hide what happened.
I looked at myself.
And for the first time, I didn’t see a wife trying to save her marriage.
I saw a woman who was scared.
A woman who needed help.
Then there was a knock on the bathroom door.
“Grace.”
Brandon.
I froze.
“Yes?”
“Don’t make the makeup obvious.”
I stared at the door.
“What?”
“You know what I mean.”
My heart sank.
He wasn’t asking if I was okay.
He was worried people would notice.
“I don’t want people asking questions.”
I closed my eyes.
“Okay.”
That was always my answer.
Okay.
Even when everything was not okay.
The drive to the restaurant felt endless.
Veronica and Candace sat in the back seat taking pictures.
Laughing.
Whispering.
I sat beside Brandon, staring out the window.
Nobody spoke to me.
Nobody asked how I felt.
Nobody apologized.
When we arrived, Brandon grabbed my arm before we entered.
His fingers tightened.
Not enough to leave a mark.
Just enough to remind me.
“Remember the story.”
I looked at him.
“What story?”
His eyes were cold.
“You fell.”
I felt my heart race.
“And if someone asks?”
“You tripped in the house.”
I whispered:
“And if they don’t believe me?”
He leaned closer.
“Then you better convince them.”
The restaurant doors opened.
Inside were fifty people.
Friends.
Family.
People who had known us for years.
The room was decorated beautifully.
Golden lights.
Flowers.
A large banner celebrating ten years of marriage.
Everyone turned toward us.
At first, they smiled.
Then they saw me.
The smiles disappeared.
My mother stood near the table.
Her face changed immediately.
She looked at my eye.
Then my eyebrow.
Then Brandon.
I saw fear in her expression.
But before she could speak, Brandon stepped forward.
He smiled.
A perfect husband smile.
“Everyone, thank you for coming.”
The room became quiet.
“I know some of you may have noticed Grace had a little accident.”
My stomach dropped.
He put his hand around my shoulder.
I wanted to move away.
But I couldn’t.
“She fell at home.”
Nobody laughed.
Nobody smiled.
Then Brandon said something I never expected.
Something that would expose him forever.
“Actually, it wasn’t just an accident.”
The room went silent.
He looked toward his sisters.
And smiled.
“My sisters had to teach her a little lesson.”
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Veronica lifted her champagne glass.
Candace laughed.
People stared.
Some looked confused.
Some looked horrified.
And then…
The door behind us slammed open.
Everyone turned.
I turned.
And my entire body froze.
Standing there was Natalie.
My twin sister.
Her hair was messy from a long drive.
Her face was filled with anger.
Not ordinary anger.
The kind of anger that comes from seeing someone you love being destroyed.
She looked at me.
At my bruised face.
At the husband standing beside me.
At the two women smiling behind him.
And she understood everything.
Without saying a word.
Natalie walked into the room.
Slowly.
Everyone moved aside.
She stopped directly in front of Brandon.
And her voice shook the entire room.
“You let your sisters hurt my sister.”
Nobody breathed.
“You watched them hurt her.”
Brandon tried to laugh.
“Natalie, this is a family event.”
She ignored him.
“You brought her here with a broken face and expected everyone to celebrate?”
Brandon’s smile disappeared.
“This isn’t your business.”
Natalie looked at him.
“You made it everyone’s business when you decided to be proud of it.”
Then she turned toward Veronica.
“You hit her.”
Veronica crossed her arms.
“She needed to learn respect.”
Natalie’s expression changed.
And that was the moment I knew…
Everything was about to change.
Because my sister had not driven four hours just to argue.
She had come prepared.
And she was about to reveal something that would destroy the perfect image Brandon had spent ten years protecting.
