Alysha Clark Opens Up: Joy for WNBA’s Growth, But Heartache for Overlooked Veterans
WNBA veteran and two-time champion Alysha Clark has spoken candidly about the league’s recent surge in popularity — and the emotional complexity she feels watching it unfold.
In a heartfelt interview after a team practice, Clark expressed genuine joy and pride over the WNBA’s expansion, record-breaking viewership, and rising star power. However, her excitement was mixed with a deep sense of sadness and reflection — particularly when thinking about the sacrifices and efforts made by her former teammates and the veterans who helped build the foundation of the league.
“I’m so happy to see where the league is going. It’s beautiful. It’s powerful,” Clark shared.
“But at the same time, it’s hard not to feel a little sad — for the women I played with, who gave everything when nobody was watching.”
Clark, who has played in the WNBA since 2012, pointed out how players from earlier eras helped push through tough conditions — from low pay and limited media exposure to grueling travel schedules and minimal recognition.
“They fought so hard for us to be here. And now, when the lights are finally on, they’re not in them,” she said quietly.
While the league celebrates the new generation of stars like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Aaliyah Boston, Alysha’s comments highlight the emotional undercurrent felt by many veterans — a mix of celebration and mourning for the time, talent, and tenacity that often went unnoticed.
Still, Alysha remains optimistic and supportive:
“I wouldn’t trade my journey for anything. And I hope the ones coming up now will know their history — and honor it every time they step on the court.”
Her words serve as a powerful reminder: behind the bright spotlight shining on the WNBA today are decades of silent struggle, sacrifice, and sisterhood that made it all possible.
