David Justice Breaks Silence After Viral ‘Motherly’ Comment About Halle Berry — And Her Response Says It All
David Justice didn’t expect a storm when he opened up about his past marriage to Hollywood icon Halle Berry—but the internet had other plans.
In a recent appearance on the popular “All the Smoke” podcast, hosted by former NBA stars Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, the ex-MLB player reflected on his short-lived marriage to Berry in the 1990s. What started as a nostalgic look back quickly turned controversial when Justice explained why he believed the marriage didn’t work out.
“I’m a Midwest guy. So back then, I had this traditional mindset. I thought a wife should cook, clean, be motherly,” he said. “But Halle didn’t cook, didn’t clean, didn’t really seem motherly. And then we started having problems.”

That comment—especially the word “motherly”—set social media ablaze.
Users on X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok quickly criticized Justice for clinging to outdated gender roles. “So basically, he wanted a maid?” one user wrote. Others questioned how such expectations aligned with marrying a rising Hollywood superstar. The general consensus: it wasn’t Halle that was the problem.
To his credit, Justice admitted his own shortcomings, saying he lacked emotional maturity and that therapy might’ve helped at the time. “I just didn’t have the relationship tools I needed,” he added. But the damage was already done.
Then came Halle Berry’s epic response.
On August 14—her 59th birthday—Berry posted a series of radiant vacation photos with her longtime partner, musician Van Hunt. The caption? “Phew…! cooking, cleaning and mothering.” Just six words, yet the message was crystal clear.

In the photos, Berry glowed in a black bikini, sipping wine on the beach, surrounded by sunshine and loved ones. One image featured a heartfelt card that read “Happy Birthday Mom,” underscoring her thriving role as a mother to her two children.
The internet hailed it as the “clapback of the year.” With grace, wit, and zero bitterness, Berry flipped the narrative. She didn’t argue. She didn’t get defensive. She let her life—and her joy—do the talking.
Justice, meanwhile, hasn’t said much more. When Access Hollywood caught up with him days later and asked about the viral moment, his only reply was: “Nothing else to say.”
And maybe there isn’t.
Three decades after their split, one thing is clear: Halle Berry continues to rise above the noise. She’s not just a successful actress or a public figure—she’s a woman who defines life on her own terms. Whether she’s mothering, acting, loving, or just living, she’s doing it with the kind of authenticity that no podcast comment can touch.
