High heels create an even greater problem. When the heel is elevated, body weight shifts forward toward the toes. Combined with a narrow toe area, this creates intense pressure on the big toe joint.

Dr. Armor explains that the human foot was not designed to spend decades compressed inside narrow footwear.
“Our feet evolved to spread, adapt, and absorb force naturally,” he says. “When we continuously force them into shapes they were never designed for, problems can appear.”
Another overlooked issue is wearing shoes that are too small.
Many people unknowingly wear shoes that do not provide enough space for their feet. This problem often begins in childhood, when growing feet are placed inside shoes that restrict natural movement.
A properly fitting shoe should provide enough room for the toes to spread. Dr. Armor recommends paying attention not only to shoe length but also to width.
A shoe may appear large enough from heel to toe, but if the front area is too narrow, the toes remain compressed.
The design of a healthy shoe should include three important features.
First, the shoe should have a flat base without a significant heel elevation. This helps distribute weight more naturally.
Second, the toe box should follow the natural shape of the human foot rather than forcing the toes into a pointed shape.
Third, the shoe should provide enough width so the toes can move freely.
However, Dr. Armor says footwear is not the only factor involved.
Many people develop bunions because of problems higher up in the body’s movement system.
One important factor is a weak or collapsed foot arch. When the arch does not provide enough support, the foot may roll inward excessively during walking. This changes how forces travel through the foot and places additional stress on the big toe joint.

Stand with your feet facing forward and allow your knees to move inward. Notice how your arches flatten and how pressure shifts toward your big toes.
Now activate your glute muscles and straighten your knees. Many people notice that their arches lift and their feet become more stable.

According to Dr. Armor, effective treatment should not focus only on the visible bump.
“The mistake many people make is treating the symptom instead of understanding the cause,” he says.
A complete approach may involve improving footwear, strengthening the muscles that support the foot, improving ankle mobility, and correcting movement patterns.
Dr. Armor also warns people not to wait until bunions become severe.
Early changes, such as occasional discomfort, pressure around the big toe joint, or difficulty finding comfortable shoes, may be signals that the foot needs attention.
The good news is that many risk factors can be changed.
Even people who have inherited characteristics associated with bunions can reduce their risk by making smarter choices.
Dr. Armor compares it to sun exposure.
“A person with lighter skin may have a higher risk of sun damage, but that does not mean damage is inevitable. Protective choices matter,” he explains.
