In a special episode of Ride with Norman Reedus, Keanu Reeves joined his friend Norman on an unexpected detour: an 11-mile ride into the mountain town of Piñon, home of Rancho Luna Lobos – a sanctuary where “underdogs” are transformed into champions.
Rancho Luna Lobos is more than a dog sledding ranch. It’s a haven where rescued and abandoned dogs find healing, purpose, and a second chance. For over twelve years, founders Fernando and his wife Dana have built a 55-acre paradise, turning a childhood passion into a lifelong mission.
“We want this to be a sanctuary for both dogs and people,” Dana explained. “Dog sledding is just the medium. The real goal is to let every dog live its best life—and to help people rediscover discipline, connection, and joy along the way.”
Reeves, who once tried dog sledding in Lapland, was instantly captivated. “Smells like sled dogs. Are we going to see some pups?” he laughed, moments before being swarmed by eager tails, bright eyes, and playful howls.
Among the pack was Nickel, the fastest dog on the ranch—a Husky and Greyhound mix with an almost superpowered oxygen capacity. Then came Lily, a Pyrenees–Malamute mix who, as Keanu joked, “might need a Tic Tac.” And finally Nanook, a striking Timberwolf–Malamute hybrid with 85% wolf blood, a reminder of the dangers of breeding wolf-dog mixes without understanding their primal instincts.
When the sled ride began, Norman and Keanu cheered the dogs on as they bounded across the trails. Commands like “Haw!” and “Gee!” echoed through the snowy hills—ancient words carried over from Alaskan mining days, now keeping the rhythm alive in Utah.
After the ride, both men paused to take in the snow-capped mountains. Reeves reflected softly: “I love people who discover their calling. The way they dedicate themselves to the dogs, the work, the life… it’s inspiring. There’s danger everywhere, but there are lessons everywhere too.”
At Rancho Luna Lobos, it isn’t just about sled dogs. It’s about love, resilience, and the belief that with care and patience, even the most overlooked can become champions.
