On her recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, two-time Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Lorde stunned the audience with an unexpectedly raw confession: the unconventional therapy that finally freed her from the stage fright that once nearly destroyed her career.
Fans know Lorde for her chart-topping anthems like “Royals”, “Green Light”, and “Solar Power.” But behind the aura of confidence and artistry lay a deeply human struggle: crippling stage fright.
“It was horrific, honestly. Since I was five years old doing community theater, all the way through my first tour at 16—I was paralyzed every time I went on stage,” Lorde admitted.
The turning point came when she turned to guided MDMA therapy—a treatment still controversial but increasingly recognized in medical research.
“I tried everything—talk therapy, meditation, breathing techniques… nothing could reach the root of it. With MDMA therapy, everything changed overnight. I woke up and I just knew—it was gone.”
For Lorde, the process wasn’t a wild, chaotic trip but what she described as a “quiet journey.” Wearing an eye mask, lying still for hours, and guided by therapists, she accessed a deeper layer of healing.
“Some fears live very deep in the body, in places no amount of talk therapy or rational analysis can touch. But in that space, it felt like something unlocked,” she explained.
Colbert, never missing a comedic beat, quipped: “So after six hours of therapy, did you feel like going out and building a boat?” The audience laughed, and Lorde shot back with a grin: “Maybe that’s exactly the Molly vibe—boatbuilding.”
Beneath the humor, though, was a revelation: Lorde had reclaimed her freedom.
As she prepares to release her fourth studio album “Virgin” and launch the Ultrasound World Tour this September, she steps onto the stage no longer as the trembling teenager hiding backstage—but as an artist grounded in calm, self-trust, and courage.
“I once believed I’d never escape it. But the truth is, there are ways to heal at the root. I want to share this because I know there are so many people out there just like me.”
By opening up about her private healing process, Lorde not only stripped away the illusion of perfection often projected onto celebrities—she also sparked a larger conversation about mental health, alternative therapy, and the universal human search for freedom within our own bodies.
