Michael Jackson’s Weight and Diet | What Did He Eat?
In the vibrant world of music, few names resonate as profoundly as Michael Jackson. From his early days with the Jackson Five, Michael captivated audiences with his chubby cheeks and infectious smile. He was the embodiment of youthful exuberance, a symbol of health and vitality, and a model for a wholesome American family. Growing up in a household filled with music and love, Michael and his brothers thrived on an active lifestyle, rehearsing daily and performing on stage, which kept them fit and energetic.
However, the pressures of fame began to take their toll. According to his mother, Katherine, when Michael was at home, he maintained a normal diet, enjoying time with his brothers playing basketball. But life on the road was a different story. The Jackson brothers often found themselves resorting to fast food and sugary snacks to cope with their hectic schedules. Like many teenagers, Michael developed a sweet tooth, particularly for Kentucky Fried Chicken. His friend, David Guest, recalled how Michael would indulge in fried chicken, humorously claiming that removing the skin made it “organic.”
As Michael transitioned into adulthood, his relationship with food became increasingly complicated. He became preoccupied with his weight and image, often encouraging those around him to improve their appearance. By the early 1980s, Michael sought to sculpt his body into that of a dancer, believing that a leaner physique would enhance his performances. By the time “Thriller” was released, he had adopted a vegetarian lifestyle, eschewing alcohol and drugs due to his strong religious beliefs. This commitment to health, however, was juxtaposed with his endorsement of Pepsi, a brand he reportedly never consumed.
During this period, Michael openly practiced fasting at least once a week for both religious and health reasons. Yet, rather than resting, he would dance vigorously in his bedroom, believing it was beneficial for his body. Despite his vegetarianism, Michael was notoriously picky about his food, often leaving meals untouched. Katherine recalled that he once employed a full-time chef, but he would only eat a couple of bites before pushing the plate away.

As the years progressed, Michael’s dieting habits became more concerning. While filming the “Thriller” music video, his weight plummeted to a reported 120 pounds. Those close to him grew increasingly worried about his inconsistent eating habits, especially as they prepared for the Jacksons’ Victory tour. Witnesses noted that he often appeared dizzy, and there were speculations about anorexia nervosa. Michael himself expressed a troubling sentiment to his mother, stating, “If I didn’t eat to live, I’d never eat.”
His eating habits continued to spiral, with instances of him consuming only a handful of M&Ms in a day. Katherine noted that Michael enjoyed having the last word in discussions about his diet, often dismissing concerns about his weight by claiming his doctor assured him he was in excellent shape. However, the demands of the 1984 Victory tour took a toll on his health, leading to exhaustion and dehydration.
During this tumultuous time, Brazilian chef Remi Villa Real was called upon to help Michael with his nutrition. She recalled receiving a sudden call to join him on the tour due to his stomach issues. The pressure of canceled shows and financial losses prompted the urgent need for her expertise. Michael’s health was deteriorating, and he refused to perform until she arrived to cook for him.
As Michael embarked on subsequent solo tours, his doctor insisted on a high-protein diet, including fish, to maintain his stamina. Reluctantly, Michael agreed, though he expressed his aversion to eating anything that had once been alive. Despite his resistance, the additional nourishment was crucial for his high-energy performances, which often resulted in significant weight loss after each show.
The toll of touring and the stress of maintaining his public persona led to recurring weight fluctuations. After the allegations against him surfaced in 1993, Michael’s eating habits deteriorated further. He lost approximately 10 pounds in a matter of weeks, often stopping eating altogether when he felt upset. His friend Elizabeth Taylor had to intervene, physically feeding him during this difficult time. The stress of the allegations took a severe toll on his health, leading to a drug addiction that spiraled out of control.
Years later, during the 2005 child molestation trial, Michael’s health continued to decline. Nutritionist Dick Gregory reported that Michael’s weight had dropped significantly, and he struggled to maintain a healthy appetite. The stress of the trial left him feeling like a “zombie,” unable to eat or drink properly. Even after being found not guilty, Michael retreated into isolation, further deepening his dependency on drugs.
Despite his struggles, Michael made an effort to maintain a semblance of normalcy for his children, often sitting down for meals with them, even when he claimed not to be hungry. His friend and director Spike Lee noted that Michael was a devoted father, always wanting to be present for his kids.
In 2009, as Michael prepared for his highly anticipated “This Is It” London performances, his physical condition was far from ideal. Lou Ferrigno, famous for his role as The Hulk and who personally helped Jackson train for the tour, revealed that Michael ate only once a day. This routine became an inside joke between them, with Ferrigno often saying he needed to “put meat on his bones.” Stress and exhaustive training weighed heavily on Michael’s frame, yet despite his thinness, he maintained remarkable energy during their training sessions.
Michael’s struggles with eating persisted; he would sometimes skip meals entirely, to the extent that a staff member was hired solely to remind him to eat. His tour director regularly assisted by cutting up his chicken for him. Karen Faye, his makeup artist and close friend, once noticed she could actually see Michael’s heartbeat through his chest’s skin—a haunting sign of his frailty. When she alerted his manager, the response was telling: “So get him a bucket of chicken,” highlighting the tension between concern for his health and the pressures to maintain an image.
Michael’s former security guard, Michael Taperoo, recounted the singer’s thin appearance amidst immense stress as they prepared for the tour. Their last meeting at a Beverly Hills restaurant left an impression; Taperoo noted, “This is the skinniest I’ve ever seen you,” to which Michael replied simply, “I’ve been rehearsing.”
Tragically, on June 26th, 2009, the morning following Michael Jackson’s sudden death from cardiac arrest, his official weight was recorded at 136 pounds, with a height of 5 feet 9 inches. An autopsy revealed his stomach was empty except for partially dissolved drugs he had taken hours before his passing—drugs that likely contributed to his untimely death.
Michael Jackson’s life was a complex tapestry woven from incredible talent, public adoration, and deep personal struggles. His early years showcased innocence and joy, but the pressures of fame, rigorous performance schedules, and personal demons led to severe challenges regarding his diet and health.
The demanding physicality of his performances meant that maintaining his strength required proper nutrition—something he battled with throughout much of his career. His religious convictions, pickiness with food, intense fasting, and the stresses of legal and personal turmoil all intersected to impact his well-being. Beneath his star-studded image, Michael was a man coping with immense pain and vulnerability.
This tragic story serves as a somber reminder that even iconic figures face battles unseen by the public. Michael’s journey with diet, health, and addiction paints a profoundly human portrait behind the superstar.
