Chapter 2 — The Door at the End of the Hall
Chapter 2 — The Door at the End of the Hall
Hannah’s heart nearly stopped.
One second, Paige had been sleeping peacefully in the small storage room behind the restaurant kitchen.
The next, the baby was gone.
Hannah stood frozen in the doorway, staring at the empty blanket on the floor.
“No…”
The word escaped her lips as barely more than a breath.
She rushed inside.
The little pink blanket was still there. Paige’s stuffed rabbit was lying beside it. Even the bottle Hannah had prepared earlier was sitting untouched on the metal shelf.
But her daughter was nowhere to be seen.
“Paige?”
Hannah’s voice cracked.
She searched behind the boxes, beneath the small table, and inside the adjoining supply closet even though she knew a baby could not possibly have crawled that far.
Nothing.
Her hands began to shake violently.
“Paige!”
She ran out of the storage room.
The kitchen was crowded with employees rushing between ovens and counters. Plates clattered. Orders were being shouted. Customers laughed somewhere beyond the swinging doors.
Nobody seemed to notice that Hannah’s entire world had just collapsed.
She grabbed the nearest waitress by the arm.
“Did you see my baby?”
The young woman blinked.
“What?”
“My daughter. Paige. She was in the storage room.”
“I—I thought she was sleeping.”
“She was!”
Hannah’s voice rose into a desperate cry.
“She’s gone!”
The waitress’s face immediately changed.
“What?”
Hannah didn’t wait for another question.
She ran toward the service corridor.
Her mind raced through every possibility.
Maybe someone had moved Paige.
Maybe another employee had taken her outside.
Maybe—
Then her mother-in-law’s words from that morning slammed into her memory.
“You can’t keep dragging that child everywhere you go, Hannah.”
“One day you’re going to lose her because you’re too irresponsible to be a mother.”
And then the sentence that had seemed cruel but meaningless at the time:
“Maybe someone else should raise her.”
Hannah stopped dead.
A terrible chill spread through her body.
“No.”
She shook her head.
Her mother-in-law was cruel, but she would never—
Would she?
Hannah immediately pulled out her phone.
There were no missed calls.
No messages.
Nothing.
She tried calling the security desk, but before the call connected, a familiar voice came from behind her.
“Looking for something?”
Hannah turned.
Brenda stood at the end of the corridor.
The restaurant manager’s perfectly styled hair and immaculate black uniform looked completely untouched by the chaos around her.
Her expression was strangely calm.
Too calm.
“Where is my daughter?” Hannah demanded.
Brenda raised an eyebrow.
“Your daughter?”
“Paige. Where is she?”
Brenda sighed.
“I told you this morning that bringing a baby into a professional restaurant was a terrible idea.”
Hannah stepped closer.
“Where is she?”
“I have no idea.”
“You were the one who told me to put her in the storage room.”
Brenda’s lips curled into a thin smile.
“And you listened.”
Something about that smile made Hannah’s stomach turn.
“You know where she is.”
“Careful, Hannah.”
Brenda’s voice became colder.
“You’ve already been warned about bringing personal problems into this workplace.”
“My baby is missing!”
“And whose fault is that?”
The words struck Hannah like a slap.
For a second, she could barely breathe.
Then she heard something.
A faint sound.
A soft mechanical hum coming from the far end of the corridor.
Hannah turned toward it.
There was a heavy gray door she had never noticed before.
A red sign above it read:
AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.
She moved toward it.
Brenda immediately stepped in front of her.
“That area is restricted.”
Hannah stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because I said so.”
“Move.”
Brenda’s expression hardened.
“No.”
Hannah pushed past her.
She grabbed the door handle.
Locked.
Her heart hammered.
“Open it.”
Brenda grabbed her wrist.
“I said no.”
Hannah looked down at Brenda’s hand.
Then back into her eyes.
“My daughter is behind that door.”
Brenda’s face changed.
Only for a fraction of a second.
But Hannah saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
Hannah pulled her arm free.
“Security!”
Her scream echoed through the corridor.
“SECURITY!”
Footsteps suddenly thundered from the opposite direction.
But before anyone reached them, another voice cut through the hallway.
“What’s happening?”
Everyone turned.
Alexander Remington stood at the end of the corridor.
The owner of the restaurant had arrived.
Tall, sharply dressed, and terrifyingly composed, Alexander looked completely out of place among the frantic kitchen staff.
His dark eyes moved from Hannah’s tear-streaked face to Brenda’s nervous expression.
Then to the locked door.
“What happened?”
Hannah ran toward him.
“My baby is missing.”
Alexander’s expression changed instantly.
“What?”
“Paige was sleeping in the storage room, and now she’s gone.”
His eyes became dangerously cold.
“How long?”
“Maybe ten minutes. Fifteen at most.”
Alexander looked toward the security officer.
“Lock every exit.”
The officer immediately reached for his radio.
“No one leaves this building.”
Brenda stepped forward.
“Mr. Remington, this is unnecessary. The woman is being hysterical.”
Alexander slowly turned his head toward her.
“Did I ask for your opinion?”
Brenda fell silent.
Alexander looked back at Hannah.
“Where was the baby?”
“In the storage room.”
“Show me.”
Hannah led him there.
Alexander entered the room and immediately began studying everything.
The blanket.
The bottle.
The boxes.
The small window.
The floor.
He crouched beside the blanket.
His fingers touched the fabric.
Then he noticed something.
A tiny pink sock.
It was lying several feet away from where Paige had been sleeping.
Alexander picked it up.
His jaw tightened.
“She didn’t leave voluntarily.”
Hannah stared at him.
“What?”
“The sock was pulled off.”
He looked at the floor.
“There are marks here.”
Hannah stepped closer.
Tiny scratches were visible in the dust.
Not from a crawling baby.
From an adult shoe.
Alexander stood.
“Someone carried her.”
Hannah’s face went white.
“Who?”
Alexander didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked toward the corridor.
“Who had access to this room?”
Hannah swallowed.
“Brenda.”
Brenda immediately protested.
“That’s ridiculous!”
Alexander’s eyes locked onto her.
“Where were you between four and five?”
“I was working.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Brenda hesitated.
“I was on the restaurant floor.”
Alexander turned to the security officer.
“Check the cameras.”
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“Sir…”
“What?”
“There is a problem.”
Alexander’s expression darkened.
“The cameras in this corridor went offline at 4:47 PM.”
Silence.
Hannah’s heart sank.
“Someone turned them off.”
“Exactly.”
Alexander looked directly at Brenda.
She took a step backward.
“I didn’t do anything.”
Alexander didn’t respond.
He simply walked toward the restricted door.
“Open it.”
The security officer entered a code.
The lock clicked.
The heavy door slowly swung inward.
A dark service corridor stretched beyond it.
Hannah immediately heard something.
A faint whimper.
Her entire body jolted.
“Paige!”
She ran forward.
Alexander caught her arm.
“Wait.”
Another sound came from deeper inside.
A baby’s soft cry.
Hannah began sobbing.
“That’s her.”
Alexander motioned to two security guards.
“Stay behind me.”
They moved down the corridor.
The passage eventually opened into an unused service area beneath the restaurant.
At the far end was another door.
And lying outside it was Paige.
Wrapped in her pink blanket.
Alive.
Crying.
Hannah broke free from Alexander and rushed toward her.
“Paige!”
She scooped her daughter into her arms.
The baby immediately buried her face against her mother’s chest.
Hannah collapsed to her knees.
“Oh God…”
She kissed Paige’s forehead again and again.
“I’m here. Mommy’s here.”
Alexander crouched beside them.
“Is she hurt?”
Hannah quickly checked the baby.
“No.”
Her voice shook.
“No, I don’t think so.”
Alexander’s shoulders relaxed slightly.
But his expression remained hard.
He looked at the door beside them.
There was a small brass plaque attached to it.
PRIVATE EXECUTIVE SUITE — A. REMINGTON
Alexander stared at it.
Someone had deliberately left Paige outside his private office.
Not hidden.
Not abandoned randomly.
Placed there.
A message.
Someone wanted him to find her.
Alexander stood slowly.
“Nobody touches that door.”
The security guards immediately surrounded the area.
Then Brenda’s voice came from behind them.
“Oh my God.”
Alexander turned.
Brenda was standing several yards away.
Her face was pale.
“You see?” she said quickly. “The baby was never in danger. Someone probably moved her to keep her safe.”
Alexander’s eyes narrowed.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“You knew exactly where she was.”
Brenda froze.
Alexander stepped toward her.
“You knew the cameras were down.”
“I—”
“You knew this corridor was restricted.”
Brenda’s breathing became shallow.
“And somehow, you knew the baby would be found outside my private office.”
“I didn’t—”
Alexander raised one hand.
The entire corridor fell silent.
“Take Brenda into custody.”
Two security guards immediately seized her arms.
“What?”
Brenda screamed.
“You can’t arrest me!”
Alexander’s voice remained calm.
“I’m not arresting you.”
He leaned closer.
“I’m making sure you don’t disappear before the police arrive.”
Brenda began struggling.
“You don’t understand!”
“I understand perfectly.”
“No!”
She looked toward Hannah.
Then toward Paige.
And for the first time, genuine terror appeared in her eyes.
“You have no idea who you’re dealing with!”
Alexander’s expression became colder.
“Then tell me.”
Brenda said nothing.
“Who ordered you to take the baby?”
Still nothing.
Alexander looked at the security officer.
“Search her office.”
Brenda suddenly panicked.
“No!”
That single word told Alexander everything.
The officer turned immediately.
“Search it.”
Brenda screamed as the guards dragged her away.
Hannah held Paige tightly against her chest.
Her daughter was safe.
But the nightmare was far from over.
Alexander returned to Hannah.
“There’s something you need to know.”
Hannah looked up.
“What?”
He lowered his voice.
“The person who arranged this wasn’t trying to hurt Paige.”
Hannah’s eyes filled with confusion.
“Then what did they want?”
Alexander looked at the private office door.
“They wanted Paige to be found here.”
“Why?”
His jaw tightened.
“Because they wanted it to look like you abandoned your child inside my private area.”
Hannah’s blood ran cold.
“Why would anyone want that?”
Alexander looked directly into her eyes.
“To destroy your reputation.”
“To get you fired.”
“And possibly…”
He paused.
“…to make sure someone could take Paige away from you.”
Hannah’s arms tightened around her daughter.
Then a thought struck her.
There was only one person who had ever threatened to take Paige away.
Marcus.
Her ex-fiancé.
Paige’s father.
The man who had disappeared the moment Hannah told him she was pregnant.
The man who had once looked her directly in the eyes and said he would make sure she regretted bringing his child into the world.
Hannah whispered his name.
“Marcus.”
Alexander’s eyes sharpened.
“You know him?”
Hannah nodded slowly.
“He is Paige’s father.”
A long silence followed.
Alexander looked at the sleeping baby.
Then back at Hannah.
“Tell me everything.”
And for the first time, Hannah realized that the disappearance of her daughter had never been a random act of cruelty.
It had been planned.
Someone had been watching her.
Someone had been waiting.
And somewhere outside the walls of the restaurant, Marcus Vance was already preparing his next move.
