The extraordinary numbers immediately fueled speculation that one of the largest attacks on Iran’s subterranean military infrastructure had taken place. But amid a rapidly escalating regional war and an information environment filled with competing battlefield claims, there is currently no independent confirmation of either the reported 50,000 troops or the assertion that thousands of missiles were destroyed in a single operation.
What is clear is that Iran’s underground military infrastructure has become an increasingly important focus of the conflict.
Iran has spent years constructing tunnels, hardened missile facilities and deeply buried installations intended to protect some of its most strategically valuable weapons from aerial attack. Recent satellite analysis and battlefield reporting have documented repeated efforts by U.S. and Israeli forces to damage missile infrastructure, tunnel entrances, air defenses and other military facilities.
Reuters reported last week that six months of war had severely degraded significant portions of Iran’s military capabilities, although Tehran continued to possess missiles and drones capable of threatening U.S. forces and regional targets. The news agency reported that U.S. assessments earlier in the conflict could confidently account for the destruction of only around a third of Iran’s missile arsenal, while the status of another portion remained uncertain, with some weapons believed damaged, destroyed or trapped inside underground facilities.
That uncertainty explains why Iran’s tunnel network has become so strategically important.
A WAR MOVING DEEP UNDERGROUND
Iran’s ballistic missile strategy has long depended on survivability.
Instead of concentrating its most important weapons in exposed surface installations, Tehran has constructed underground complexes capable of concealing missiles, launch equipment and supporting infrastructure.
Some are buried beneath mountains or protected by layers of rock and reinforced structures.
Such facilities are intended to complicate enemy intelligence operations and make it considerably more difficult for conventional airstrikes to destroy Iran’s missile forces before they can be launched.
Reuters reported on September 4 that the United States was considering further action against the heavily fortified Pickaxe Mountain complex near Natanz, a site containing two deeply buried tunnel systems.
Earlier satellite imagery reviewed by Reuters also showed Iran repairing and strengthening military and nuclear installations, including fortifying tunnel entrances near Natanz and burying entrances at the Isfahan nuclear complex.
Those preparations illustrate the central problem facing attacking forces: destroying what is visible above ground does not necessarily eliminate what remains protected beneath it.
A tunnel entrance can be damaged or blocked while missiles, equipment and personnel farther inside survive.
Conversely, even when underground equipment remains intact, destroying entrances, power systems, communications links or transportation routes could temporarily make the weapons inaccessible.
That has transformed Iran’s underground network into a continuing contest between fortification and increasingly sophisticated methods of detection and attack.
THE “THOUSANDS OF MISSILES” CLAIM
The assertion that thousands of missiles were inside the targeted tunnels is particularly difficult to verify.

Housing tens of thousands of personnel underground would require extensive ventilation, water, sanitation, food supplies, communications, command facilities and multiple protected access routes.
Iran certainly operates extensive underground military complexes, and some installations can accommodate substantial numbers of personnel.
But describing 50,000 troops as being present inside targeted tunnels at the same moment would require exceptionally strong evidence.
No such evidence has yet emerged from reliable reporting reviewed for this article.
Casualty estimates are particularly unreliable immediately following major attacks.
Even governments directly involved in an operation may need hours or days to determine how many people were inside a hardened facility.
Underground installations make that process even more difficult.
Until Iranian authorities, attacking forces, satellite imagery or other independently verifiable evidence establishes the scale of the attack, the 50,000 figure should not be treated as fact.
RENEWED U.S.-IRAN FIGHTING

The Associated Press reported today that the U.S. military said it had destroyed five Iranian oil tankers following Iranian attacks on an American warship. AP has also reported renewed coordination among Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq and Yemen, adding another dimension to the regional confrontation.
Meanwhile, Iran has publicly emphasized its missile capability. Iranian state media recently promoted an improved ballistic missile and described a more aggressive doctrine under which Tehran could act preemptively against perceived threats.
The combination of renewed American strikes, Iranian missile attacks and continued activity by Tehran-aligned groups has created one of the most volatile periods of the conflict.
WHY THE TUNNELS MATTER
If attacking forces are now concentrating more heavily on Iran’s underground missile complexes, the objective appears straightforward: reduce Tehran’s ability to preserve its missile arsenal during prolonged bombardment.
Surface missile launchers can move.
Factories can be rebuilt.
But deeply buried complexes represent long-term strategic investments that are much more difficult to replace.
They may contain storage chambers, maintenance facilities, communications infrastructure and protected areas from which missile operations can be coordinated.
Destroying or disabling them could therefore have effects far beyond a single day of fighting.
Yet hardened underground facilities are also among the most difficult military targets to assess.
An enormous explosion above a mountain may produce spectacular footage without destroying chambers deep underground.
Conversely, a precisely placed strike against a vulnerable entrance or structural point could cause operational disruption without creating dramatic surface destruction.
This is why satellite analysis over subsequent days will be particularly important.
Analysts will search for collapsed entrances, crater patterns, secondary explosions, destroyed roads, emergency activity and attempts to excavate damaged sections.
IRAN’S RESPONSE COULD DETERMINE WHAT COMES NEXT
The scale of Tehran’s next response could provide another clue about the effectiveness of attacks against its missile network.
If Iran maintains a high tempo of ballistic missile launches, that would suggest substantial elements of its arsenal and command structure remain operational.
A sudden reduction could indicate disruption, although it could equally reflect a deliberate decision to conserve weapons.
Iran has already demonstrated that it retains the ability to conduct missile attacks despite months of military pressure.
Reuters reported in late August that despite major losses to Iran’s air defenses, navy and other military capabilities, Tehran continued to possess drones and missiles capable of attacking shipping and American installations.
That surviving capability is one reason underground missile facilities remain so important.
THE DANGER OF AN EXPANDING WAR
The strategic consequences extend beyond Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most sensitive energy corridors, and renewed attacks have already increased pressure on shipping and oil markets.
Recent U.S. operations against Iranian tankers and Iranian missile attacks on American and regional targets illustrate how quickly one strike can trigger retaliation elsewhere.
A major attack on Iran’s underground missile infrastructure could intensify that cycle.
Tehran could respond against military bases, maritime traffic or regional infrastructure.
American forces could then retaliate again.
Iran-backed groups could expand their own operations.
The result would be a conflict spreading geographically even if neither side formally announced a broader war.
WHAT CAN ACTUALLY BE CONFIRMED
For now, the most important distinction is between the broader military situation and the sensational numbers circulating with the headline.
Iran unquestionably possesses extensive underground military infrastructure.
Its missile facilities have repeatedly been targeted.
U.S.-Iranian hostilities have intensified again in recent days, and Iran continues to launch missiles despite months of strikes.
What cannot currently be confirmed is that a single attack today bombed “thousands of missiles” together with 50,000 Iranian troops inside tunnels.
Those numbers may ultimately prove exaggerated, incorrectly attributed or based on preliminary battlefield claims.
If subsequent satellite imagery or official evidence demonstrates that several major underground complexes were successfully penetrated, however, the strategic story could still be significant even without the dramatic casualty figure.
Destroying missile production equipment, trapping weapons underground or disabling launch infrastructure could materially reduce Iran’s ability to sustain long-range attacks.
