The house was engulfed in flames, firefighters were shouting as the fire spread rapidly. Then, through the thick black smoke, a dog leapt straight through a shattered window, his fur lit by firelight. No one believed he’d survive. What happened next silenced the entire rescue crew.

In Knoxville, Tennessee, around 2:37 AM, firefighters responded to a call from a neighbor reporting a house fire. When they arrived, flames had already taken over the ground floor of a small wooden home. No one knew if anyone was still inside.

As they prepared to break through the front door, they saw something no one expected—a medium-sized Border Collie, black and white fur, about 50 pounds, sprinting straight toward a ground-floor window and jumping into the blaze.

Within seconds, the dog disappeared behind the curtain of smoke.

Just thirty seconds later, the same dog burst back out of the window. He was dragging something in his mouth—a thick blanket. Underneath it was a man, unconscious, half his body already out of the smoke.

Firefighters ran forward, pulled the man out, and gave immediate first aid. He was rushed to the hospital for smoke inhalation and minor burns. That man was Jack Harmon, 34 years old, the homeowner. And the dog—his name was Max, his best friend for the last six years.

Two days later, Jack woke up in the hospital, disoriented. His first words were, “Where’s Max?”

A firefighter stepped in and told him the whole story. When Jack learned that Max had jumped through the flames and dragged him out, he broke down crying.

Choosing the right breed is absolutely essential – for example opting for a small dog if you don’t have much room at home, or a hypoallergenic dog if you suffer from allergies.

There’s even academic guidance to seek out, with Psychologist Stanley Coren’s book ‘The Intelligence of Dogs’ ranking breeds by instincts, obedience, and the ability to adapt.

There’s also always the option of adopting a dog from a dog shelter for a minimal fee – for example from the Dogs Trust.

But if you are wanting a pedigree dog (one that’s a pure bred registered with the Kennel Club) then you’re going to have to splash out – research from the pet experts at Pets4Homes shows that the average puppy in the UK now costs around £2,000 – more than double the average price in 2019.

But some breeds – due to demand or scarcity – cost significantly more than others.
