Standing up with his hands clearly visible, the soldier turned his back on his own lines and followed the buzzing drone across no man’s land toward Ukrainian positions.
This scene, captured in stark high-definition video and broadcast across encrypted messaging networks, is no longer an isolated act of desperation. It is part of a highly organized, systemic collapse of morale within the Russian military. Thousands of Russian soldiers are making the exact same choice—and President Vladimir V. Putin’s vast security apparatus is proving powerless to stop it.
What began as sporadic defections early in the conflict has transformed into a structured, institutionalized network of voluntary surrenders. According to official data from Ukraine’s “I Want to Live” project, more than 10,000 Russian servicemen have voluntarily crossed the frontlines to surrender. The program now averages between 60 and 90 voluntary surrenders per week.
