JUST IN: Person of Interest in Brown University Shooting Released
Authorities announced today that a person of interest detained in connection with the shooting at Brown University has been released, as investigators continue to search for answers in a case that has shaken the campus and surrounding community.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that the individual, who was taken into custody for questioning shortly after the incident, is no longer being held after investigators determined there was insufficient evidence to link them directly to the shooting. Officials emphasized that the release does not mean the investigation is over, nor does it rule out the possibility of future arrests.

“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” a law enforcement spokesperson said. “We are continuing to follow multiple leads and are urging anyone with information to come forward.”
The shooting occurred earlier this week inside a university building at Brown University, prompting an immediate lockdown and a large-scale response from campus police, local law enforcement, and federal authorities. Students and faculty were instructed to shelter in place as officers secured the area and assisted the injured.
University officials confirmed that multiple people were injured during the incident, and the campus community has been deeply affected. Classes were suspended, and counseling services were made available as students, faculty, and staff attempted to cope with the shock and trauma of the violence.
President Donald Trump addressed the incident publicly, expressing condolences to the victims and their families and pledging federal support. He said law enforcement agencies were working closely together to determine exactly what happened and to ensure the safety of the campus.
“The release of this individual shows why it’s important to let law enforcement do their jobs carefully and thoroughly,” Trump said in brief remarks. “We want justice, but we also want accuracy.”
Officials explained that the individual initially detained became a person of interest based on proximity to the scene and early witness accounts. As investigators reviewed surveillance footage, forensic evidence, and additional statements, they concluded that the individual could not be connected to the attack at this time.
Brown University administrators released a statement acknowledging the development and thanking law enforcement for their continued efforts. They reiterated that campus safety measures remain in place and that additional security patrols will continue while the investigation proceeds.
“Our priority is the safety and well-being of our community,” the statement said. “We understand the fear and uncertainty this situation has caused, and we are committed to keeping our students and staff informed.”
The release of the person of interest has renewed concerns among students and parents, some of whom have expressed anxiety over the possibility that the shooter remains at large. University officials and police have urged calm, stressing that there is no immediate threat to the campus based on current information.
As investigators continue their work, authorities say more details will be released when confirmed. For now, the Brown University community remains on alert, united in grief and determination as it seeks healing and answers in the wake of a devastating incident.
