The second Nathan’s father hung up, I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
I was standing in our kitchen gripping my phone so tightly my knuckles were white. Across from me, Nathan looked just as shocked.
“She’s pregnant with my baby?”
He said it like he couldn’t even process the words.
I stared at him.
I wanted to believe him.
I really did.
But every woman who has ever been betrayed says the same thing afterward.
.
.
.

“I never thought he would do that.”
And suddenly every memory started replaying in my head.
Every family dinner.
Every time Juliana showed up unexpectedly.
Every moment Linda tried to push them together.
Had something happened when I wasn’t looking?
Nathan saw the question in my eyes immediately.
“No.”
His voice cracked.
“I swear to you. No.”
I didn’t answer.
Because I wasn’t ready to.
Trust isn’t something you can switch on and off.
And at that moment, mine was hanging by a thread.
Nathan sat down at the kitchen table and started pulling out his phone.
“Ask me anything.”
“What?”
“Anything. Every day. Every month. Every place I’ve been. I’ll show you.”
For the next two hours we went through everything.
His calendar.
His phone records.
His credit card statements.
His location history.
Every family event where Juliana had been present.
Every work trip.
Every weekend.
Every holiday.
And the more we looked, the less sense the accusation made.
There wasn’t a single unexplained gap.
Not one secret hotel.
Not one suspicious charge.
Not one hidden phone number.
Nothing.
According to every piece of evidence we could find, Nathan hadn’t been alone with Juliana once during our entire marriage.
That should have made me feel better.
Instead, it made me more confused.
Because if Nathan wasn’t the father…
Then why would Juliana claim he was?
Around midnight I called my best friend, Violet.
She answered immediately.
The second she heard my voice, she knew something was wrong.
Twenty minutes later she arrived at our house with her husband Griffin.
Both of them looked like they’d climbed straight out of bed.
I explained everything.
The pregnancy.
The accusation.
The family meeting.
The possibility that my husband had another child on the way.
When I finished, nobody spoke for a moment.
Then Griffin leaned forward.
“There is a very easy solution.”
We all looked at him.
“Paternity test.”
The room went silent.
Because he was right.
If Juliana was really pregnant, then eventually a paternity test would tell us the truth.
No opinions.
No speculation.
Just facts.
For the first time all night, I felt a tiny bit calmer.
Then Nathan’s phone started ringing.
Linda.
He ignored it.
It rang again.
And again.
And again.
By the seventeenth call, my nerves were completely shot.
Finally Nathan answered and put the call on speaker.
Linda immediately launched into a speech.
Juliana was devastated.
Nathan needed to step up.
He needed to take responsibility.
He needed to support the mother of his child.
I felt anger replacing fear.
I grabbed the phone.
“Medical proof.”
Linda stopped talking.
“What?”
“We want proof she’s pregnant.”
Linda’s voice turned icy.
“How dare you.”
“I also want a paternity test.”
The explosion was immediate.
Linda screamed so loudly the speaker distorted.
She accused me of being jealous.
Cruel.
Controlling.
Heartless.
Everything except reasonable.
Because the truth was simple.
If Juliana was telling the truth, proof shouldn’t be a problem.
The harder Linda fought against providing evidence, the more suspicious everything became.
Nathan finally took the phone back.
His voice was calm.
Steady.
Stronger than I’d heard in years.
“No proof. No discussion.”
Then he hung up.
The silence afterward felt strange.
Like something fundamental had shifted.
For the first time since I’d met him, Nathan wasn’t trying to keep everyone happy.
He was choosing a side.
My side.
The next morning I called my sister, Coraline.
She’s a paralegal.
The kind of person who can spot inconsistencies before most people finish telling a story.
By that afternoon she was on a flight to see me.
When she arrived, she turned our dining room into an investigation headquarters.
Phone records.
Bank statements.
Calendars.
Emails.
Everything got examined.
For hours she cross-referenced every piece of information Nathan provided.
Late that evening she finally looked up from the mountain of paperwork.
“Either Nathan is the most sophisticated liar I’ve ever met…”
She paused.
“…or he’s telling the truth.”
Nathan looked exhausted.
I felt my shoulders loosen for the first time in days.
Then Griffin said something none of us had considered.
“What if Juliana is pregnant by someone else?”
The room went quiet.
“What if she’s using Nathan’s name because she knows it’ll pull him back into her life?”
The possibility hit me like a truck.
Because it actually made sense.
Juliana had spent years refusing to let go.
Linda had spent years encouraging her.
And suddenly, right after my pregnancy announcement, Juliana was claiming to carry Nathan’s baby.
The timing was too perfect.
Too convenient.
Too calculated.
That night I barely slept.
But for the first time since the phone call, my fear had changed.
I was no longer terrified that Nathan had betrayed me.
I was beginning to wonder if someone else was trying to destroy our marriage.
And deep down, I already knew who that someone might be.
To be continued in Part 3…
