Black Woman Pulled from Priority Line — They Didn’t Know She Built the Airline’s App
In a world where technology and diversity are driving forces of progress, one recent airport incident has sparked conversations about bias, representation, and the unseen contributions of Black women in tech.
Last Friday morning at JFK International Airport, Dr. Maya Thompson, a lead software engineer and architect behind one of the nation’s largest airline apps, was pulled aside while waiting in the priority boarding line. Thompson, who is Black, had purchased a first-class ticket and was standing in the designated priority lane when an airline employee approached her.
According to witnesses, the employee questioned her eligibility to be in the priority line, suggesting she may have been mistaken about her boarding group. Dr. Thompson calmly presented her boarding pass, which clearly indicated first-class status. Despite this, she was asked to step aside while other passengers in the priority lane were allowed to proceed.
“I felt singled out and embarrassed,” Thompson later shared in an interview. “It was as if my presence in that space was being questioned, regardless of what my ticket said.”
What the airline staff did not realize was that Thompson was not only a frequent flyer but also the principal engineer who led the development of the very app they used to scan boarding passes and manage customer service. As the architect behind the airline’s mobile platform, she had spent years streamlining processes and improving the customer experience for millions of travelers.
Other passengers in line began to notice the discrepancy, with some voicing their concerns to staff. One passenger reportedly asked, “Why are you singling her out? She has the same ticket as the rest of us.” It was only after a supervisor intervened that Dr. Thompson was allowed to board.
The incident quickly gained attention on social media after Thompson tweeted about her experience, sharing, “Irony: They pulled me from the priority line. Guess they didn’t know I built the app they’re using to check tickets.”
Her story resonated with thousands, sparking a broader discussion about implicit bias, the challenges faced by Black women in tech, and the importance of recognizing talent regardless of appearance.
In response to the incident, the airline issued a public apology, stating: “We deeply regret the experience Dr. Thompson had at our boarding gate. Our commitment is to ensure all customers are treated with respect and dignity. We are reviewing our training protocols to prevent future occurrences.”
Industry leaders and tech organizations also weighed in. “Dr. Thompson’s experience highlights the critical need for diversity and inclusion, not just in hiring but in everyday interactions,” said Lisa Chen, president of Women in Tech America. “Her contributions have shaped the way millions travel, yet she was not afforded the respect she deserves.”
For Dr. Thompson, the incident was a reminder of both the progress made and the work still to be done. “I want people to know that Black women are building, leading, and innovating in spaces you might not expect,” she said. “Don’t judge someone’s abilities or worth based on how they look.”
Her story stands as a powerful testament to resilience and excellence in the face of bias, and a call for greater awareness and change within the travel and tech industries.
