P. Diddy Jurors Reportedly Yawn During Lengthy Testimony of Alleged Victim
The federal racketeering and sex trafficking trial of Sean “P. Diddy” Combs entered another marathon day of cross-examination, with the defense continuing its aggressive questioning of “Mia,” the fourth alleged victim to take the stand. As the proceedings stretched on, reports from inside the courtroom indicated that some jurors appeared fatigued, with a few even seen yawning during the extended and, at times, repetitive testimony.
Defense Hammers Away at Credibility
Mia, testifying under a pseudonym, previously described years of alleged abuse, including sexual assault and psychological manipulation while working as Combs’ personal assistant. On this day, defense attorney Brian Steel zeroed in on her credibility, dissecting her resume, social media posts, and a series of text messages sent to Combs both during and after her employment.
Steel’s line of questioning was relentless. He highlighted messages in which Mia wished Combs a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, as well as a text where she described him as “one of the most influential people I know.” The defense also introduced a video, admitted after much legal wrangling, showing Mia applying lip gloss, blowing a kiss, and wishing Combs a happy 44th birthday—behavior the defense argued was inconsistent with her claims of trauma and abuse.
Jurors Show Signs of Fatigue
According to courtroom observers, the defense’s strategy of repeatedly emphasizing Mia’s positive messages and demeanor in videos may be wearing thin. Long Crime reporter Elizabeth Milner, who has attended every day of the trial, noted reports of jurors yawning and appearing restless as the cross-examination dragged on.
“There comes a point where the jury gets the point, and now you’re beating a dead horse,” commented legal analyst Melba Pearson. “You’re literally making us stay longer because you keep pounding away at the same point.”
The Prosecution’s Challenge
For prosecutors, the case hinges on the credibility of key witnesses like Mia. However, the defense’s focus on her continued positive interactions with Combs after the alleged abuse raises difficult questions for the jury about victim behavior and the complexities of abusive relationships.
Trial attorney Alexis Rosenberg noted, “It’s not a clean case for the prosecution. The defense is exploiting every inconsistency, as they should. They’re showing she’s not this weak person—look at this video, look at these texts.”
The defense also pressed Mia on why she never recorded or documented the alleged abuse, and why she continued to reach out to Combs for years after leaving his employment. Mia responded that she was “still brainwashed” and that her environment made her constantly seek Combs’ approval.
The Broader Strategy
Civil rights attorney Joe Richardson pointed out that the defense’s approach is not just about undermining Mia, but about casting doubt on the entire prosecution case. “You want to cast doubt over this entire thing—including the notion that perhaps this isn’t a criminal enterprise at all,” Richardson said. “You’ve got Mia saying things that are very positive about P. Diddy even after she left. Was he still influencing her, or were those positive things actually true?”
A Test of Endurance
As the trial continues, it’s clear that both sides are locked in a battle not just over facts, but over perceptions. The prosecution must convince the jury that Mia’s testimony—and that of other alleged victims—reflects the reality of a pattern of abuse and criminal conduct. The defense, meanwhile, is betting that repeated reminders of her positive words and actions will be enough to sow reasonable doubt.
In the meantime, as testimony stretches on, the jury’s patience—and attention—may become a factor in itself.
