When Keanu Reeves sits down to talk about Formula 1, he doesn’t just share facts—he tells the story with the same intensity that made him a household name. His latest passion project, Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story, now streaming on Disney+, dives deep into one of the most remarkable underdog triumphs in modern sports history.
The “Smiling Assassin” of Formula 1
At the center of the story is Ross Brawn, a man described by Christian Horner of Red Bull Racing as a “smiling assassin.” Reeves reflects on the nickname with a grin: “Ross looks all friendly, but I think they’re all smiling assassins. Off the track, it’s gentlemanly. But on the track—it’s cutthroat.”
That duality—camaraderie behind the scenes and ruthless competition on the circuit—sets the stage for the extraordinary tale of the Brawn GP team’s 2009 season.
Born in Crisis
The Brawn team was forged in the fire of financial collapse. In late 2008, Honda pulled out of Formula 1, leaving hundreds of employees at the Brackley factory facing redundancy just before Christmas. Ross Brawn stepped in, leading a management buyout and saving both jobs and dreams. For the symbolic price of one pound, the team was reborn—underdogs in every sense.
But the challenges were staggering. They had no engine until Mercedes agreed to supply one. They had no sponsors until Richard Branson’s Virgin brand took a gamble. They had only two cars—and no luxury of costly crashes. “They literally couldn’t afford mistakes,” Reeves emphasizes.
A Season Like No Other
With limited resources but unmatched determination, Brawn GP shocked the racing world. Jenson Button, a driver whose career was at a crossroads, found himself in the best form of his life. His teammate, Rubens Barrichello—long overshadowed at Ferrari—rediscovered his fire. Together, they delivered results that no one believed possible.
Protests, courtroom battles, and even talk of a breakaway series from Formula 1 itself couldn’t derail them. Against all odds, the team surged ahead, proving that ingenuity and grit could outshine money and politics.
“The storytelling writes itself—it’s unbelievable,” Reeves says with genuine awe.
Beyond the Track
Reeves’ passion for storytelling extends beyond film and racing. When asked about his band Dogstar, he lights up again. After a 20-year hiatus, the group reunited in 2023, toured extensively, and now hopes to bring their music overseas. “It’s been really exciting and fun. We’re hoping to get to the UK next year,” he shares.
The Legacy of Brawn
In the end, Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story is about more than cars and races. It’s about resilience in the face of collapse, unity in crisis, and the sheer will to defy the odds. Reeves, with his trademark sincerity, brings these themes to life—reminding us why stories like this continue to inspire long after the engines go silent.
