Keanu leaned back, his fingers tapping restlessly against the armrest. The weight of Kim’s words pressed on him.
“If there’s even a chance,” he repeated quietly.
Kim nodded. “You can’t let the tabloids write the ending to this story for you. If Sophie is yours, you deserve to know. And if she’s not, she deserves clarity too.”
The room fell silent. Outside, the city pulsed with its usual hum, but inside, the air felt still, heavy with unspoken questions.
That night, Keanu barely slept. When he finally drifted off, his dreams were fractured flashes: Sophie’s teddy bear, Emily’s trembling voice, and a pair of eyes—brown, searching, achingly familiar.
By morning, the decision was made. He called Maryanne, his publicist, and said, “I need to meet them. Privately. No cameras, no noise.”
Maryanne groaned audibly. “Keanu, do you realize what you’re saying? If the press gets wind of this, it will explode.”
“It already has,” he said simply. “I can’t ignore it. Not when a little girl believes I’m her father.”
Later that afternoon, a quiet arrangement was made. A trusted mutual friend—someone from the charity organization—delivered a message to Emily, asking if she would meet Keanu in a private café after closing hours. No reporters. No photographers. Just them.
Emily almost said no. Fear gripped her as she stared at the message on her phone. But Sophie overheard, her teddy bear tucked under her chin, and whispered, “Please, Mama. I need to see him again.”
Emily’s heart cracked. She nodded, more to herself than anyone else.
That evening, the café was dimly lit, empty except for one corner booth. Keanu sat there in his usual quiet posture, a cup of tea steaming in front of him, though he hadn’t touched it. His eyes lifted when the door opened.
Emily stepped inside, her hand clasping Sophie’s. She looked older than the girl he remembered—lines of worry etched into her face—but there was no mistaking the resemblance. His breath caught.
Sophie broke free the moment she saw him and ran forward, teddy bear flopping in her arms. “You came!” she said, sliding into the booth beside him as if she’d always belonged there.
Keanu smiled softly and glanced at Emily. She hesitated by the door for a moment, then finally walked over, her steps slow, cautious.
“Emily,” he said quietly.
Her eyes flickered with recognition—and guilt. “Keanu.”
The room seemed to shrink around them. For a long moment, no one spoke. Then Sophie looked up at him and asked the question that had been waiting in the air since the charity event.
“Are you really my dad?”
The café went silent, the question hanging between them like fragile glass, waiting for someone to be brave enough to touch it.
